  • Trip Report Tokyo Oct Trip Report Including Some Non Disney Sights (You're Warned)

First off I wanted to thank everyone that helped me plan this trip. I asked quite a few questions in the Tokyo Disney Forum and everyone was incredibly helpful and insightful. Without your help we would have been hopelessly lost so I very much appreciate it!

Ok on to the good stuff, I have to warn everyone that this will be just as much a Tokyo trip report as it is a Tokyo Disney trip report. If you're just interested in they Disney stuff skip down about half way. Secondly there's a combination of cell phone pictures and my nice camera pictures so forgive the jarring quality gaps. There's also a LOT of pictures, I took over 2,000 so sifting out just hte good stuff was hard! Let the trip report begin!

My friend Nick and I had always wanted to visit Tokyo. It's one of those places that's very foreign yet familiar and inviting. Europe is nice and it's very beautiful but we wanted some where completely foreign to us so we decided we'd give it a go. Our hometown is San Jose, CA and lucky for us ANA flies a direct non stop flight on the new Boeing 787 from San Jose to Narita airport. Gotta love that, non stop flight plus being able to fly on the new 787, win win!

Here is our chariot the new Boeing 787.

We opted for the premium economy seat which was about $800 more then the economy seat but boy was it worth it. For an 11 hour flight I'd like all the comfort I can get. The business seats looked great but those were about $7,000, no thanks. Here's a view of my seat. Tons of arm and leg room.

The plane was simply amazing. The ceilings were probably a good 10 feet tall, the ride was smooth and the flight attendants were great. They kept bringing us food and drinks, about 15 minutes into the flight I got my first taste of Japan when I asked for a Sprite.

I can't sleep on planes so I entertained myself with some awesome movies like Brick Mansions and Transformers.....ok it was slim pickings and those movies really sucked but hey it passed the time. Everyone around me was sleeping and after I finished an actual good movie (X-Men Days of Future Past) I took a look at where we were at.

Well that's depressing. We eventually make it to Narita after 11 long hours. We hop on the NEX train from Narita into Tokyo station where we were staying. We checked into our hotel which was the Four Seasons near Tokyo Station. Here's a view of our room and the view out the window of the trains coming into Tokyo Station.

It was about 7PM so we headed out to Shibuya. Here they have what would be the equivalent of Times Square in the States.

We wanted a taste of Japan so we went to a local ramen place called Ichiran Ramen. Here's the entrance to the basement restaurant.

After you enter you order by vending machine. You can pick out your meal and any add ons. I got a ramen with an extra noodle bowl.

You sit down in what can only be described as a phone booth. It's a tight space that has a divider between you and the person next to you with a roll up window in front of you. You sit down and fill out a sheet on how you like your ramen (extra garlic, firm noodles etc.) They then bring you the ramen by the window in front of you and then roll down the window so you are one with the ramen, mano a ramen.

And here's the aftermath. It was the most delicious ramen I have ever put in my mouth. Great start!

We came back to the hotel and retired for the night. The next day we woke up bright and early and headed over to the Meiji Shrine. The area is just amazing.

We were getting hungry so we headed over to Roppongi Hills and went to a delicious Teppanyaki place. The chef was great and we splurged for some Kobe beef. Let me tell you it did not disappoint.

Next up we headed to the top of Mori tower. This building is gigantic and at the top is an observation deck.

We then headed up to very top of the tower outside on the helipad. We were able to get a shot of the two of us (that's me on the right sporting some Disney World wear )

We then headed over to Odaiba which is a man made island in Tokyo. There's a huge 'arcade' of sorts with high tech games. Think of a Disney Quest style building called Joypolis. I don't have any pictures of it but I do have a great picture of one of the awesomely translated signs.

We had some dinner at a Korean BBQ joint and headed back to the hotel exausted.

The next day we woke up and wen to the famous Fish Market. As we were walking around we saw some pretty interesting foods, like whale bacon. Yum. This stand pretty much sums up the fish market.

My friend got an Oyster the size of an adults head. Seriously look how big this thing is!

I then got what I thought was Orange soda out of a vending machine.

Turned out to be mango soda which I was not expecting but boy was it delicious!

Next up we headed over to Senso-ji Temple.

It was beautiful but way too crowded, felt like a huge tourist trap too.

After that we went to Akihabara. It's the nerd/tech/anime persons nirvana. My friend is into that all so he had a great time. I was more intersted in taking pictures of all the signs.

We headed to bed after knowing that tomorrow was Tokyo Disney Day! I promise in the next post there will be very few non Disney pictures. More to come......

Alrighty so part 2 as promised!

We woke up and took a stroll over to the Imperial Palace which was right next to the hotel. I do have to add here since I didn't say it before but transportation around Tokyo is FANTASTIC. The subway system is great, goes everywhere you want and has trains every couple minutes. We never had an issue catching a train or finding our way around. Everything is written in English too which makes it extremely easy. Anyway back to the pictures of the Imperial Palace.

          Views into the city

After our fun filled adventure to the Imperial Palace we hopped aboard a train to Tokyo Disney. When you get off at the train station there's a "Welcome Center" to check into your Disney hotel. The great thing about this is you get to check in, drop off your bags and get tickets. They then deliver your bags to the appropriate hotel. Great service!

We were staying at the MiraCosta so with our bags dropped off and tickets in had we headed over to DisneySea on the monorail.

We got off the monorail and entered the most beautiful theme park I have ever been to, Tokyo DisneySea

We passed under the Hotel MiraCosta archway and we were greeted with this STUNNING view.

We knew we had to go to Mysterious Island first and ride Journey to the Center of the Earth. As we were walking over we just saw amazing (please not I'll use this word A LOT to describe TDS) sight after amazing sight.

We got to Mysterious Island and it was VERY bright so I don't have a lot of good pictures. I have some good night shots I'll post later in this report. I was able to get one good shot of the machinery in Mysterious Island.

Mysterious Island is one of the most fascinating and immersive areas in the history of theme parks. The water boils and errupts, the drilling machine turns it's wheels and makes horrible groaning noises (good horrible ), steam billows from vents, it's just incredible.

We then got to the Holy Grail of rides Journey to the Center of the Earth.

I had high expectations of Journey but was a little wary as I heard some folks say it was a let down. I'll tell you that couldn't be further from the truth, I was totally blown away. The build up is fantastic. The ride has a great depth and detail that's very subtle. then it leads up to the most advance AA I've ever seen (I'd put the Yeti from Expediition Everest up there...well back when it worked...but you see that for such a glimpse it's a let down. Journey you get to take in the glory that is the lava monster). One of my favorite rides of all time.

After Journey I was hungry and got a snack. My friend got a frozen mango (which I had later and was aweome). I opted for a 'tropical fruit' mickey Popsicle. (btw, I'll be showing you all the snack I bought, I love just walking around the park and snacking)

Then we passed by the infamous Gyoza stand. Eh we're here, why not try one!

Well I have to tell you it was disgusting. Yes it's black for Halloween which doesn't make it appetizing in the least. The tatse was just terrible though I thought. Too much dumpling and not enough filling.

As we were leaving the area Mt. Prometheus erupted.

Yes that's right it actually belches FIRE! How great is that?

Next stop was Indy and Raging Spirits. I don't have any good daytime pictures but I'll have some night shots later. Indy was Disneylands Indy but better. The only thing I missed is the fire in the main chamber from the California version.

As we were leaving a I saw a person eating a sausage in what appeared to be a dinner roll. I tracked one down and it was pretty tasty!

We continued on to the Arabian Coast and rode Sinbad.

The ride was the surprise hit of the trip! It's sorta like a cross between It's a Small World and Pirates of the Caribbean. It's a boat ride with small figures like It's a Small World, but these figures have the range of movement like an AA in Pirates. It's simply unbelievable how many fluid figures that have, and I have no idea what that song is saying but boy was it catchy!

We decided to go over and ride Tower of Terror. It was fun but the over the shoulder seat belt really ruined the drops. We then went aboard the SS Columbia, another great piece of detail. I took a couple pictures from the deck.

It was getting to be around dinner time and we had a reservation at Magellan's. Restaurant was really good and service was amazing as usual. Here's a picture of the interior.

As it was late I really wanted to walk around the whole place getting some night shots. Here's a bunch of them.

We finished the night by watching Fantasmic. While the show is defintely more high tech then Disneyland or Disney World it lacked some charm. I missed the intimate setting of the Rivers of America and the Cider Mill. If I had to rate Fantasmic's I'd say
          #1 Disneyland
          #2 TDS
          #3 DHS

We headed back to the hotel to get a good night sleep as tomorrow we were waking up early for Disneyland! More pictures to come!

Thanks for your lovely review. Your pictures are amazing and the weather seemed very good.

Im glad that you enjoy both Tokyo and TDR. If you are still at the resort, they have an amazing Hakata ramen at Ikspiari. It is Ippudo so if you have time, please come and have a try. It is one of the best Ramen shop in Japan.

I really love the Yucatan roll, i always eat like 4 rolls whenever Im there.

Glad youre enjoying it! We were there September 25th through October 4th. Weather was great, 70-80s every day and only one day if light rain. We just narrowly avoided the typhoon!

Wow, I was there at that time as well. The weather was super fine for a week. If you stay until the typhoon it would be so much cooler. I rode the Jungle Cruise in the night before the storm and it was so so cool. Heavy rain and windy. and you could have your own cruise.

Yes, it was really a mouth-watering beef. I think I need to eat something healthier. I mostly eat high marbled score/ Wagyu beef everyweek.

Re: Tokyo Oct Trip Report Including Some Non Disney Sights (You're Warned)

Onwards we go! Our next stop was Tokyo Disneyland. We woke up very early and made our way over on the monorail. We were given tickets to enter the park 15 whole minutes early (doesn't sound like a lot but boy you can get a lot done in 15 minutes!). We were pleasantly surprised to see we were one of the first ones there!

We made a mad dash over to ride Monsters Inc before the park opened. Monsters was a great dark ride, makes me wish we had that instead of the Monsters Inc. ride at DCA. A word of warning, if you're 6ft or above RIDE ALONE. My 6' 4" friend and my 6' self initially rode together and we were CRAMMED. After a while it actually got pretty painful, there is zero leg room in those cars.

Next we high tailed it to ride Pooh's Hunny Hunt. Everything you've heard about this ride is correct. It's defintiely one of my favorite dark rides of all time. The trackless system adds a bit of variety to it so you're never quite sure where you're going to go next. And the bouncing scene! So simple and so effective. Of course the highlight is the Pooh dream sequence. After we rode Pooh we got off and wanted to get a Fastpass. Now mind you this is about 30 minutes after park opening and here's the Fastpass distribution sign.

6:40PM in half an hour! Holy cow!

We went around Fantasyland riding some rides, nothing really stood out. We went on Haunted Mansion Holiday which felt very similar to DL's. Fun ride that was like a 'best of' Disneyland and Disney World Haunted Mansion.

We had seen the Mark Twain pulling into the dock and decided to hop aboard. As we were coming around I was able to snap this picture which I just love.

As we made our way around to Adventureland we saw this line.

What could this be for you ask? Do they have some new E-Ticket? Well I'll tell you it was the Jungle Cruise! It was newly refurbished with some neat digital mapping technology in the temple scene. It was a fun ride but not worth the 3 hour wait time! While in line they did have some very funny signs like this one that made me chuckle.

We decided to get some breakfast at this point. I couldn't help but get a Mike "Melon Bread". Extremely cute.

As we approached the castle we noticed rows and rows and rows of seats in front of the castle, what could this be for? Is there some special event going on?

No, it's reserved seating you can get for the castle projection show. You enter a lottery each day to win tickets to the showing. We tried our luck and got one!

                              Back to castle pictures.

And next up was Space Mountain. I was pleased to see the speedramp still in operation. I miss this!

Different space ship design in the queue.

The ride was fun. Exactly the same as DL without the music.

I was feeling a pit peckish and wanted a snack. We came across a cart with a really long line. I had no idea what it was but hey, maybe if it has this long of a line it's good? Whatever it was it came in either chocolate or sweet potato. I ordered chocolate and this is what I got, sorry for the blur.

It was pretty much a chocolate lava cake stick. Liquid hot chocolate on the inside, the outside was sorta like a crunchy stale cake. Not horrible but not particularly good.

We went through Toontown next. I had seen flavored popcorn's throughout our trip and each time there was always a gigantic line. This time I stopped to take a picture. I know Japanese folks love their flavored popcorn but look at this line!

At some point I actually bought some chocolate popcorn. I was not a big fan.

We made another loop and hit our favorites again. As the day drew on we ended up having dinner at the burger place in Tomorrowland and I had a burger, fries, and chicken nuggets.

A word of caution, DONT EVER GET THIS The burger was truly nasty. Fries were tasty and the chicken nuggets tasted like something you'd get at Carl's Jr.

I wanted to see the Electrical Parade so we found a good spot. I have to say I miss this show so much! The highlight was the Genie float. He changed into different outfits and designs. His Mr. Incredible one was my favorite.

We then saw the castle projection show which was really cool, although more fire always could make a show better.

I spent the rest of the night taking pictures.

We were leaving for the airport the next day so we decided to turn in. The next morning we went over to DisneySea again to do some shopping. We got there about 1 hour after opening and saw this at Midway Mania.

Yes in one short hour the fastpasses are gone and the wait is 200 minutes, wow!

We then had to say our goodbyes to Disney and took a bus to the airport. Since we were in Premium Economy we got to use the lounge at the airport which was really nice. Free food and drinks too!

We started the long flight back already missing all the wonders of Tokyo. It truly was a special trip and one I'll never forget. The people in Japan are so welcoming and friendly it made our trip really great. Thanks again to everyone that offered advice and answered all of my questions. It's people like you that make our trips wonderful. Thanks again!

I'm also happy to answer any questions. I still can't stop talking about our trip.
