  • Disney Studios, Tokyo

Hi there everyone. I've got a question I'm hoping some of you can help me with.
About six months ago I read an on-line article discussing the ideas that the Imagineers had for Tokyo's second park before they settled on the DisneySea idea.
Apparently the first of these ideas was to build a modified version of EPCOT, which closely resembled the never-used WESTCOT idea developed for California.
But here's the really interesting bit; the second idea was to build a large (and I mean GIGANTIC!) Walt Disney Studios park. Allegedly, this idea got as far as concept art and model-making stages before Oriental Land Company decided against it.
But here's the thing. Although I've been searching for months, I simply can't find any evidence to back this story up. Nor can I find the article I originally read. (I had thought it was over at Jim Hill's site, but I can't find it in the archives there.)
So, does anyone here have any info or rumours about this supposed project? I'm specifically asking about the WDS project, as there's quite a bit of info on WESTCOT already on the web.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I wish I could help but I do not know anything about this rumored project.

Yes, I've heard of it too. In order to compete with Universal Studios being built in Osaka.

TDLFAN, you were my best hope!

At least someone else has heard of this project. I was beginning to think I'd gone mad or something.

I think I remember a bit about it. I'm pretty sure that it was supposed to be a lot like the Disney-MGM Studios, but it would include Indiana Jones Adventure, and the Mermaid Lagoon, and a few things that made it into DLP's WDS. I can't recall anything else though.

But...there is NO Indiana Jones Adventure or Mermaid Lagoon at WDSP.

I think arsonwinter means these two rides IN ADDITION to some of the attractions that eventually turned up in Paris.
It really would be interesting to draw comparisons between the French and Japanese WDS concepts, don't you think?

There definitely was a concept for a major Disney Studios park for Tokyo before OLC opted to go with the TDS concept. I'm not sure if I've actually ever seen any renderings/art of the proposed park, but I'm quite sure it exists somewhere. Just like the ORIGINAL Disney-MGM Studios park that was planned for Paris by 1995.
