Day One Tuesday 19 Sept 2006

Arrived at Narita at 9.00 am and proceeded to make our way through baggage claim and customs etc.My transfer had failed to turn up so I brought a ticket for the Airport Limousine which came to 3,000 yen and made my way to the pick up point. This was my first experience at seeing how well organise the Japanese are at doing things and at 10.10 am I was on my way to the Hilton in Shinjuku.Journey took around 1 hr and 30 mins and made three stops at Shinjuku Station, another major hotel and last stop was the Hilton. Also on the way we got to pass the Tokyo Disney Resort, which for a Disney nut like me was very cool indeed.

Arriving at the Hilton I was greeted by the excellent and very friendly staff who also all spoke very good English. After checking in,it was time to make my way over to Shinjuku Station which ended up being a pleasent 10 min walk passing by all the gigantic skyscappers and Japanese office workers who were walking in oposite direction to me.Thanks to the Tokyo Disney website I had already printed of details on how to get from Shinjuku to Maihama, and these were very helpful.I needed to catch the Chuo Rapid Train over to Tokyo Station and then onwards using the Keiyo Line,or as its often refered to the Musashino line.

Our train got to Disney at about 1.00 pm and it was straight over to the Monorail station to transfer over to Disney seas my destination for today. At the Ticket booth I requested a one day park ticket and was handed a English map plus my ticket.Walking through the gates over looking the Aquasphere was quite an experience as you've seen soo many pics but nothing can ever do it justice like seeing it in person.First thing I did was go over to the information board to check wait and show times and the park was busy with 3 hour waits for TOT plus 2 hours for attractions like JTTCOTE and Indy.I wasn't to bothered with this today as I really just wanted to get a feeling for this park today, besides I knew I'd be back later in the week to ride them!

I was starting to get hungry but didn't want anything to fancy so I walked pass the American Waterfront area and into Cape Cod and ordered a burger & Fries from Cape Cod Cook Off.The resturant also stages continuous live shows of Donald Ducks Boat Builders so I decided to catch and enjoy a bit of that. The show stars Mickey,Goofy,Donald and Chip & Dale and was worth a look.

Next Legend of Mythica was about to start so I ran of to Mediterranean Harbor to catch the show.I have to say the scale of this production is breath taking if only the US parks were to stage something on this scale I'd be a happy person. Not only did this show blow me away but it wasn't the full version as due to weather conditions it was an alternative version.

It was now time for another show this one being Over the Waves which I enjoyed a lot.Even through some of the music is a bit questionable ?

Next it was time to take in a couple of attractions first was Sinbad which for me was a disapointment as I was expecting more. The Animatronics were great but something was missing like where was the song that Sinbad and his friends could sing to like Its A Small Would or yo Ho a Pirates Life For Me.I think the lack of a sound track is the main reason this attraction has failed to find a audience in Japan and hopely this problem can be addressed during Sinbad's long refurb.

Second attraction which I've read mixed reviews about was 20,000 League Under The Sea and this exceeded my expectations, ok may be Im being a bit bias because Im a huge fan of the original Subs and Im happy to see them being brought back, but still this attraction impressed me a lot.

Still feeling a bit hungry I fancied a snack and had heard a lot about how popular Gyoza Sausage Buns were and decided to check them out.Very tasty in my opinion but not worth the wait to get them.

It was starting to rain now and I wanted to keep dry seeing as I left my jacket at hotel,so it was time for another show. The Big Band Beat it a great show and really helps gives you an idea at just how much money Tokyo Disney puts into a show like this.Mickey playing the drums was a real highlight for me,also nice to see the show was all in English.

It was getting late and seeing that I'd been awake over 24 hours now it was time to go to go back to the Hilton and get some sleep, especially seeing that tomorrow was my first day at TDL,so I left the park and stopped by the ticket booths to purchase a 4 day park pass and was on my way back.

        Re: Malin's Trip Report Sept 19 - 23 2006

        Part Two:Wed 20 Sept 2006

        Tokyo Disneyland.

Today I woke up at 5.am with no probs and no jetlag, which I was happy about.I wanted to be at the parks early as today was the free present day where Tokyo Disneyland castmembers hand out free gifts at the turntiles, and I knew it would bring in extra crowds, but I had no idea how many extra, more on this later. Also by leaving early I would of missed hopely the rush hours on the trains.Arriving at Maihama station I was already suprised to see large lines forming.Which by the time of park opening was stretching all the way to the monorail station, what also suprised me was that in US & Paris Resorts, parks always start letting people in early to wonder around Main Street or the other main entry shopping areas. However in Tokyo if this happened you'd get a massive stampede rushing to ride Winnie the Pooh or one of the other main attractions. And it makes good sense that at park opening letting people through the turntiles one at a time it helps thin out the congestion.

Upon entering the park we were all handed a free Halloween ornament with Minnie and Chip & Dale on the front in Halloween custumes.Over looking the parks entrance was the Mickey floral, which had green and orange flowers to celebrate the Halloween event. Also a group of characters were out greeting guest, some of which you never see in any of the US parks anymore. My first job was to find Guest Relations to get a English map,the female Castmember in front spoke excellent english, even through it sounded more American English and asked me how many I requested and afterwards wished me a great day.Wow we are not in WDW anymore, also didn't hurt that she was hot too.But credit to OLC and Disney for placing Castmembers that are not only hot but can also speak good english in places where there most needed.Despite the fact very few English speaking people ever come when compared to how large the Japanese audience is Tokyo Disney is very accomendating.

Ok enough stalling I didn't come here to perv on the Castmembers, its time to take in some attractions,I walked through a large building farcade into World Bazaar. What no train station no Town square. The buildings all have the Main Street look to them but sadly because its covered in doors by a large glass roof you loose a lot of the charm and atsmophere, and the place just sounds like your in a giant mall without the back ground music.Upon exiting World Bazaar you comes to the hub which is just massive, the Tokyo Disneyland marching band was also out in new Halloween custumes playing some Disney tunes.

Heading straight into Fantasyland I wanted to take in Pooh's Hunny Hunt for the first time as I've heard many great things about this unique to Tokyo Disneyland attraction. The stand by line was already 35 mins which by Pooh standards was short so I waited in line passing by the nicely detailed line, with and old English garden, and into the building where pages of the adventures of Winnie the Pooh were all read out in English. You step inside a Hunny pot which has the ability to move in differn't directions to other pots and without using a track,we're talking cutting technology here. The AA's were great of all the characters and the boucing room was a fun suprise, and it all ends with a happy ending so top marks from me here.

Next was time to grab a Fastpass to the Haunted Mansion which like Disneyland has Jack Skellington taking it over for the holidays. But the overlay is much more impressive here.Next was time to get a front row seat for the Halloween parade Scream & Shout.Parade while short was a lot of fun and I love the soundtrack. The parade stopped right in between the villians float and Donalds so I had a great view of the Devil Dancers, this part of the parade came a bit of a blur for obvious reasons, but I think there was some dancing involved and a lot of screaming and some smoke. The hour wait was worth it.

Next I was starting to feel hungry and no way was I going to wait during the rush hour,I had heard a lot about the Queen of Hearts Banquet Hall so I decided to give it a go.Resturant theming was amazing but the food and service was what really impressed me here.A Castmember will actually take your food to your table for you.I enjoyed the my Meatloaf w in Bacon with a selection of steamed veg and lovely sauce and Strawberry mousse and the orange hi C or what ever it was I drank.

Wanted to catch the Mickey Mouse Revue as its another unique to Tokyo Disneyland attraction. The video shown beforehand was boring and seriously outdated. But the actual show was great and all the animatronics moved with ease. While a great little show it is showing its age and I have to wonder how long its got left before the theatre is gutted out and Mickey's Phillarmagic replaces it.

Feeling full it was now time to use my Fastpass for the Mansion but first I decided to collect another one for Splash Mountain. The Haunted Mansion overlay was good and you can tell the difference in budgets California uses to Tokyo, but where was Oogie Boogie?

Heard the only way to get a good view of the Castle stage show was through a lottery so I made my way to Tomorrowland, which has a retro kind of look to it,sadly I didn't win but it was still fun to see the reactions of the Japanese guest who did win.Very happy people indeed.Tokyo was hot weather wise and I had a job controlling my thirst so I decided to get a drink a cart was selling something called Kirin and I made the mistake of buying a bottel without realising it was Green Tea,it tasted terrible but I was soo thirsty I drank it anyway.

Next I got turn away from the One Mans Dream II show due to capacity being too high.It was a good 20 min before start time and I was gobsmacked you'd never get this in the US parks.Decided to instead pass through World Bazaar and look around the shops and was suprised to find them packed with guest. No way was I stupid enough to enter one of these shops with crowds like that,so I figured from my days visiting the US parks that the Tiki Room would be crowd free, which it was.Tokyo's Tiki Room is unique and I think its my favourite out of the three.

Decided because the Jungle Cruise was sooo close by I'd check that out next, more or less the same as WDW's and because I'd done the attraction many times before I kind of guess what out Japanese skipper was saying.

It was time for my Fast Pass for Splash Mountain, always my favourite attraction at any Disney park except Paris who are too in debt to build one,and this version was good,no complaints except you don't get as wet as you would in the States. You could also tell Imagineers really had to shoehorn this attraction inside Tokyo Disneyland. The front farcade and final drop are a lot closer to the guest as well.

Next was time to pick up a Fast Pass for Big Thunder Mountain, and while I was in Fron--- sorry Westernland I decided to check out the Country Bears, who were showing the Vacation show.A lot of fun,but found it interesting how one of Henry's shoes was off his foot, bad show in my opinion, but problem was addressed and fixed for later in the week when I came back.If that had been Paris or WDW it'll still be there now,not sure why it was like this either but Im guessing the night maintenance crews are a bunch of jokers.

Time for a old favourite of mine next, the entrance to Pirates of the Carribean was very similar to the new Orleans Square version at Disneyland, and was one of the very few attractions that had a short wait of 20 mins everything else was between 60-120 mins. The attraction while a let down compared to the others was still good especially seeing all the efects were working and the audio was clear,so to some degree its better then the others as well. All the audio was spoken in English which was nice.

FastPass for Big Thunder Mountain was next and its got to be my second favourite version of the ride, sorry but my local Disney parc Paris wins this, but still not a bad effort and Paris doesn't win it by much trust me.

Was starting to feel hungry so walked over to Tomorrowland to have a Mickey Mouse cheese burger from the Tomorrowland terrace,as I was enjoying my food I could hear the parade off in the background. After dinner decided to try my hand at One Mans Dream II again and arrived just as there left the last guest through. So once again I missed seeing the show grrrr.

Decided to drown my sorrows by doing Star Tours next and was pleasently suprised. This has to be the best version of the attraction by far,the building was huge and made you feel like you were going through a futuristic airport. Also you got to see this animatronic android fixing a Star Speeder. The simulator itself felt brand new,no broken seats and you could feel the turns a lot more.

It was starting to get dark and people were already sitting down for the Tokyo Disneyland Electrical parade Dreamlights so I decided to join them, but first purchased a drink so to not be waiting that long for the parade with nothing to drink. After enjoying my drink I left it to one side and being the clumsy fool I was knocked it over and the melted ice went all over the spotless floor.About 1 min later a Cast Member was cleaning it up wow.About 30 mins later the floats passed by for the Kooky Spooky Castle Show,so I ended up sitting there sulking for the next hour that I wasn't able to win a ticket to the show. But watching the parade more then made up for it wow. Also was able to get a good video of it on my DVD video camera thanks to where I was sitting behind a tree.So I was able to stand up as I wasn't in anyones way. Also the guy next to me was able to get a decent view with his cameras so a win win situation.

I was feeling tired but wanted to wait on to watch the fireworks so decided to get a bite to eat using one of TDLFAN's recomendations I brought a bacon and pineapple pizza which was to die for, thanks TDLFAN.

Caught the fireworks just outside of Critter Country and throught there were excellent, not to long either which after a long day at the parks is the last thing you need. Was getting late so decided to leave and head back to my hotel in Shinjuku.

Next will be my full day at Tokyo Disney Seas.

I've never been on Tokyo Disneyland's version of Haunted Mansion Holiday so would you mind me asking what you prefered in their version over Disneyland's version? How could you tell that they had a much higher budget?

Tokyo Disneyland had more AA's of Sally and that.Plus seem to be more decorations out,but Tokyo still doesn't have Oogie. Both have pro's and con's but I just felt Tokyo's was better. But I havn't been on Disneyland's overlay since 2004 so Tokyo's is still very much fresh in my mind, which could be a reason I rate this one over California's.

You aren't missing much as Disneyland's HMH has not changed over the years. In fact, I don't remember seeing a Sally AA at all in Disneyland's version. Also, TDL's show scenes seemed to be a bit more detailed.

I did but sadly not many as I spent more time on the DVD video camera. When you visit a place like Tokyo Japan, you got to make the most of it as its not a place any of us get to visit often unless we're TDLFAN or Joeinjpn. So pics are limited but will try and post them one day.Hopely now that I've seen most of what TDR has to offer on my next visit in 2008 hopely I'll have more time to take more pics and actually see more of Japan itself.its gonna cost a bit soo better get saving hey.

Haven't been on the Disneyland version of Haunted Mansion Holiday since last year, but there seems to me to be a greater presence of Sally in Tokyo. When your doom buggy first takes off, you enter a room that I don't think is in any other Mansion--it's small, like a foyer with a balcony, and there you see your first AA of Jack as Sandy Claws. Sally is there, too, but she's not really an AA, just a slightly animated figure (head turns, eyes blink, I think).
I don't believe either of these figures exist in the Disneyland version.

Nope they don't. TDL's biggest advantage to its HMHN is that it uses WDW's design, which contains more chambers/show scenes. That's why there are so many new elements in TDL not found in DL.

                        Part Three:Thursday 21st of Sept 2006

                        Tokyo Disney Sea

So here we go,the second day on my 4 day park ticket was listed as Tokyo Disney Sea.I was very excited to be visiting Disney Sea for the whole day and with out being too exhausted from the time difference between the UK and Japan like I was on Tuesday.Arrived at Disney Sea around 8.50 and while like Tokyo Disneyland yesturday the line was long it was also much smaller. At 8.55 a huge ovation could be heard from the Japanese guest as Mickey and the gang made there way out to greet guest. All the main 8 characters in this park are wearing special custumes for the 5th Anniversary. The custumes are also worn by Mickey & co in the show Over the Waves, and plenty of merchadise featuring the characters is on sell at the park,my favourite being the plush Mickey wearing a captains suit that is currently sat on my desk, soo cute.

Upon entry I took out my video camera to get a decent video of the Aquasphere. This is a huge globe like fountain thats found as you walk through the gates kind of like the Mickey floral thats found at the Magic Kingdom parks. You next walk under the hotel Miracosta and into the Mediterranian Harbour. The view is fantastic as you over look the harbour out towards the Volcano which is the parks centre piece.

You could easily get lost in one of the small alley ways inside Mediterranian Harbour however I wanted to get to Mysterious Island and ride Journey to the Centre of the Earth while the line was short. The entrance to this attraction is like a hole in the wall, you follow the cave like structure until you get to these elevators which are well theme like everything is at this park. The elevators all move and shake to give you a impression that your actually going down into the centre of the earth. How far exactly you do go is anyones guess, but you do move, but got a feeling its actually up not down. The lifts are hot and it was good to get out of them, from this point its a short wait. The ride vehicle's are for someone of my height rather tight to fit into, but luckily I was given two seats to myself so I could spread out a bit more.Theming for this attraction was amazing stuff with all the giant creatures you see, other cool efects include a thunder bolt which scared me half to death and the giant Lava monster who results in your vehicle starting a high speed get away with a climantic drop from the side of the Volcano. While the quality of this attraction is good the thrill factor was a bit dissapointing.I got a better rush after riding Rock N Roller Coaster or Californian Screaming. But still one fine E Ticket that I ended up picking up a Fast Pass for straight afterwards.

While I was in Mysterious Island I throught I may as well get into the line to ride 20,000 leagues under the sea.I don't know what it is about this attraction I love so much but its great. The water efects are most impressive as are all the scenes.Maybe this attraction just reminds me too much of the subs which I use to love. What ever it is it gets top marks from me.

I took a short walk down to Port Discovery to check out the area, and rise Aquatopia. It was already very warm and I felt like cooling off so I chose the wet course.Sadly my jeans were the only things that ended up getting wet.So I ended up with wet jeans for the next 30 mins.

Next came the dark horse of the park for me Storm Rider. No idea why but I had a blast on this simulator. It far exceeded expectations for me,story was easy to follow, and the efects were all great. It was a cross between a simulator and the Armegeddon attraction at the Studios in Paris.

Next was time to use my FastPass for JTTCOTE which was yet again fun except for cracking my head against the vehicle as I was getting out, ouch.

I left Mysterious Island and had a walk around the Lost River Delta.I purchased a drink which name escapes me now but it was so refreshing and nice that I wished we sold it in the UK.I know Coca Cola produced it but it was water with a citrus taste to it.And I became addicted to the stuff.Having two bottles of the stuff around with me at all times.

I passed by attractions Indy and Raging Spirits which sadly was closed for refurbishment, and made my way to Mermain Lagoon.Took a look around this beautiful land and made my way into the waiting area for the Little Mermaid show. This show really has the wow factor to it and is well worth seeing. Also good for the kids as the action takes place above your seats so everyone can see it.

Time was getting on and it was time for lunch and to pick up a FP for TOT if still available. So I walked over to the American WaterFront, picked up a FP for 20.55 - 21.55 later that night and had a delicious sandwich from the New York Deli.Acording to my English info guide the next showing of the Big Band Beat was about to start so I made my way to the Broadway Music Theatre.

However I describe this show will not do it justice absolutely fantastic stuff. The performers were all great and treated this like it was there first. The grand finale when everyone comes out left me speechless.Just one tiny question who let Hello Kitty into the show.

As I was wondering around Mermain Lagoon I spotted a shop selling Cd's of music from the Tokyo Disney Resort,so decided to go back and buy them all.Spent I'd say easily a couple of $200 on them but well worth it.Listening to the Mermaid Lagoon BGM CD right now.The Cast Members took a great deal of time packaging my stuff up with bubble wrap to make sure everything would be in good condition for my trip back to UK.

Left Mermaid Lagoon to head over to the Arabian Coast to give Sinbad another go.Still sticking by my original opinion Im afraid.Gave the Magic Lamp Theatre show a go but was un impressed by what I seen.

The Legend of Mythica show was about to begin soon so I made my way over to the Harbour to catch a decent spot.I was standing just over the entrance to where all the floats came out and was interested to see once all the characters were all lowered back inside the floats at the end of the show a few of the performers would open a secret door and each character would then step out to a nice ovation.

After a while you start to realise this park is a lot harder to walk around then say Tokyo Disneyland is and I was starting to feel it.But no time to waste, next was time to try some sea salt ice cream which wasn't bad but couldn't taste any sea salt.

Had another couple of rides on Storm Rider and passed by Goofy and Chip & Dale all dress up in scientist custumes, including crazy colourful wig.

Gave Indy a go which was slightly better to the Anaheim version and checked out the Mystic Rythims show which I liked a lot followed by yet more walking around the park getting the overall astmophere of the park.Dinner was a Salmon & potato Pizza from the Zambini brothers resturant and picked out my spot for BraviSEAmo.

I loved BraviSEAmo a lot everything about this show is great and it even makes you forget the fact your tired have blisters and want to go to bed.Had another chance to enjoy the fireworks before finally being able to use my Fast Pass at TOT.This version of the TOT is the best for storyline and detail, however the actual ride is about the same as DCA's except maybe being more tame.

It was time to get going I was tired and knew I had another busy day a head of me tomorrow. However my overall impression of TDS after spending the whole day here is that while its a great park, but I still had a lot more fun over at Tokyo Disneyland.TDS in my opinion is lacking something from making it a great park but I can't figure out what it is.

Join me next time as I return to Tokyo Disneyland and make a short visit to Tokyo Disney Seas to get my pic taken in front of the Aquasphere.

Interesting because I had the opposite impression. TDS was way more fun for me and I ended up going there 3 times as opposed to once for TDL with my 4 Day Passport. I think what it's lacking is more attractions (preferably dark rides like Haunted Mansion). When I was there, the only attractions I really wanted to repeat were JttCotE, 20K Leagues and Indy (Tower of Terror will be added the next time I go). Compare that to TDL (Splash, Big Thunder Mountain, Pooh's Hunny Hunt, etc). TDL just has more of the "classics", hence why it might be more fun to other people. But the reason I might like TDS more is because it's more immersive and beautiful. Even though I'm technically an "attractions" person, I never felt like there was nothing to do. For me, walking around looking at the gorgeous details is more than enough!

You bring up some good points TDR_FAN,and I think I must be more of a attractions person then I realise. But hope I don't sound to negative when it comes to TDS as its a beautiful park and I'll visit it again tomorrow if I had the chance.

Not at all. I think it all depends on what one defines fun as. Personally, I think walking around and exploring TDS is "fun"....perhaps just as "fun" as riding the attractions.

Aquarius is a sports-type drink, similar to Gatorade, but I don't recall it tasting like orange.. and FYI... green tea is GOOD for you!! You should try to acquire that taste.

Aquarius tasted like Pocari Sweat (another energy drink) to me and I bought many bottles of it while I was staying at the MiraCosta from Minnie Lisa Sundries.

Kirin Lemon was probably the only lemony drink I had while I was at TDR.

I tried the Hi-C Orange only once but it tasted alright.Green Tea on the other hand may be good for you but it taste terrible maybe after a while I'd get use to it,but sadly 5 days wasn't long enough

The Coca Cola tasted ok too as I always find the coke in the States a bit sweeter to what we get in the UK.

But Aquarius was great stuff and I kept to that most of the time.I was very careful what I drank over there as Im a strong believer that you shouldn't drink anything that has a label you don't understand.I trusted Disney & OLC on the drinks it served inside the parks but anything outside the parks I kept to the brands I knew off.
