  • TDR and Tokyo Transport News

Hello everyone, a few new items regarding transportation around the Tokyo area for anyone visiting Tokyo Disney Resort.

Disney Resort Line Monorail Prices to Go Up

From April 1st, 2007, fares for the monorail will increase at least 25% across the board.
    • Single trip 200yen → 250yen
    • One-day pass 500 → 650
    • Two-day pass 600 → 800
    • Three-day pass 800 → 1,100
    • Four-day pass 1,000 → 1,400
Also originally-designed PASSNET pre-paid cards will no longer be sold. Older PASSNET cards with credit can still be used in the ticket gates.

    PASSMO System Begins

A new electronic fare system began on March 18th. The PASSMO card has an IC-chip embedded in it. Passengers can add value to the card in denominations on 1,000yen. Cards can be obtained at ticket machines at most subway and private train line stations.

PASSMO cards can be used to ride:
    • Tokyo Metro Subway (Yurakucho Line, Marunouchi Line, etc.)
    • Toei Subway (Oedo Line, Mita Line, etc.)
    • JR East Train Lines (Yamanote Line, Keiyo Line, etc.)
    • Most private commuter lines (Odakyu, Keisei, Keio, Tokyu, etc.)
In other words, PASSMO lines can be used for just about any train or city bus in the Tokyo area, EXCEPT....Disney Resort Line. The TDR monorail should begin service by the end of the year.

The PASSMO card is equivalent to JR's SUICA card and they can be used interchangeably in most situations. So, JR's SUICA card can be used to enter subway and private commuter line trains.

No Smoking Allowed on Super Express Shinkansen (Bullet Trains)

From March 18th, 2007, no smoking will be allowed on any Shinkansen trains nationwide. Previously, some cars were reserved for smoking passengers. However, this will no longer be the case.

    Hope this helps.

Good thing I always stay at one of the Disney hotels; they're the only places left where you can get free monorail passes good for your entire stay.

So I'm guessing the PASSMO cards will have the 500yen deposit cost, just like the Suica cards?

It'll be nice to only need one card for JR East (Tokyo) and Subways/Private Lines.

Although I always liked saving the cards with different designs. But that's at its end I guess... I'm guessing all of the SF Metrocard/Passnet cards will disappear, just like the JR iO cards did.

Sounds expensive. What's the current exchange rate for Yen vs. U$?

It will be so much more convenient when they implement Passmo!

Wow, look at the value of the US Dollar drop!

So about 117.5 yen per U$ Buck? My math may be a bit off, but that means a single trip is about U$3. At least it's cheaper than the Gondala rides in Venice ($120 right now).

Re: TDR and Tokyo Transport News

On a marginally related topic, does anyone know of an efficient way to buy Japan railpasses? Buying them always seems to take an inordinate number of phone calls back and forth to Jalpak. I keep thinking there must be a better way.

Can't you purchase them from the travel agency you're using?

Hmm, I wonder what the difficulty is on JALPak's end. They make it seem easy to obtain on their US website. The last time I bought one was 12 years ago during my first long-term visit. Is there a Japanese Embassy/Consulate near you that can help you out?

Sorry, didn't make myself clear. I HAVE the rail passes. It's just that it took a lot of phone calls to get them. Some other agency out there has got to be more efficient.

Still, the rail pass is one of the best deals going.
