  • OLC Looks away from Tokyo Disney Resort for Future Expansion

OLC has just released a press statement about their future expanstion plans.

    http://www.olc.co.jp/en/news_parts/20070508_02e.pdf

They talk about a new joint venture with the Walt Disney Company outside of the Tokyo Metro Population area to a new city which suggests a new focus for OLC to expand beyond the Tokyo Resort.

It will be interesting to see what this new type of "Disney Style indoor entertainment facility" will be. Could be something like a niche park that Jay Rasulo was taking about a few months back?

It is also interesting that Screamscape is report this as the thrid Disney Park for Japan. I dont think this is the case, I think this will be something totally unique and I cant think of a better place to test this new idea out than Japan!

Disney Quest meets Mall of America. Wonder if they've tapped Paul Pressler to head the place up. He would be in mall heaven...until it falls apart like everything else that he touches.

On another note, I've heard that existing landfill issues are hampering TDR's possibilities for outward expansion in it's current locale.

I was about to say, this is most likely more of an issue with lack of space to expand more than anything.

Not really. Arcades are still really sucessfull in Japan compared to the dying business here in the states. If they do make a DisneyQuest Japan, it will probably bring in a lot of cash.

I mean, hell, have you seen how big some of the pachinco halls are?

Actually while pachinco is still popular it is in fact on the decline.

This looks like Disney using OLC money to see if these Urban Centre's that Disney want to open up through out Asia and America will be a suscess or not.

Re: OLC Looks away from Tokyo Disney Resort for Future Expansion

If they're smart they'll stop thinking "What other markets can we take over" and start saying "What new ventures and concepts can we come up with."

Why does a shopping center, a hotel/resort, a theme park, an arcade or a theatre venue have to just be one category.

I think it's great they're trying to come up with some new 21st Century projects that aren't old ideas being recycled.

Disneyland was the first theme park. Let Disney create the next "first" thing, not just repeat that same first theme park in every corner of the world.

Japan is a unique place in the world - consumers with disposable income are always eager to try new things, and things get a chance to catch on and become trends like they do here in America. It's a good place to try ideas out before building them all around the US like Disney Quest did.

And by partnering with OLC, the WDC doesn't have as much financial investment in risky new ideas that could also not end up being built around the world.

It's a freakin arcade. It's got a fun little roller coaster, awful simulators and this odd snowboarding thing. It's a fun little spot but over priced and not up to Disney standards.

Neither was DisneyQuest from what I remember. It was just a five-story-tall version of GameWorks to me, only with Disney being ever-present what with the lack of fighting and shooting games that featured major violence. Hell, the only place that was even quiet there was the Create! Zone.
