  • SE Asia may be next stop for Japan Disney operator

    From Reuters

The operator of Tokyo Disney Resort, which opened the first Walt Disney Co theme park outside of the United States 25 years ago, said it may expand into Southeast Asia as it seeks new markets for growth.

Not sure what the OLC is refering to by wanting to expand its buisness to South East Asia, but I doubt it has anything to do with Disney parks. Unless Disney are looking for a partner in any future expansion. Maybe Iger's visit to Tokyo was more business related than actually celebrating the park's 25th Anniversary. Anyone care to add speculation ?

I don't do nor thrive on speculation so I have no comments.

I thought he only said it was something he would want to do not something he was going to do but I could be wrong.

I believe OLC is already planning a non-Disney park within Japan. However, almost all of their non-Disney ventures have been considered commercial disappointments (Ikspiari, Camp Nepos, verious restaurants and retail shops).

A theme park without Disney sounds like a bad idea. Don't get me wrong I think another Disney park somewhere other than Tokyo but in Japan would be a great idea, but to go it alone with out the Disney licence and WDI, it sounds a financial flop waiting to happen. Hopely the company will realise this and decide to work with Disney on all future projects.

By the way I think the relationship between Disney and OLC is going to change with the promotion of Hong Kong Disneyland Bill Ernest to President of Disney Asia. Its been reported in a few articles that he will help oversee the operations in Tokyo. Obviously it will still be OLC running the parks, but I guess the likes of Joe Schott will now report directly to Bill Ernest.
