  • [Question] So is January Crowded or not ?!?!

According to Disney and other sources, the least crowded times at WDW are typically as follows:

Lowest Attendance: January (except New Year's Day) until just prior to Presidents' week in February
The week following Labor Day until just prior to Thanksgiving week
The week following Thanksgiving until the week prior to Christmas
Now then, from what I have been hearing and reading on the boards that has not been the case - January has supposedly been very crowded indeed.

So what is the "real" story here folks ... is January crowded or not?

We are already booked and want to plan accordingly.
Also, what is the weather like - will we need lots of warm clothes?

Normally, it's not. But when I went this past January, it was packed.

          Any idea what happened?
Were there any specific events going on like conventions, sports, etc.?
I checked Disney events for this January and it looks pretty clear.

I went in late January and to my knowledge, there were no events going on. MK was so packed, My poor mom got smacked into the back of her legs/heels with strollers too many times to count. She was not happy. EPCOT was crowded too but since it's so big it can suck up the crowds better than MK can.

I went several times this January (2008) and it was mobbed each and every visit.

It wasn't crowd when I was there last January. We weren't there during the weekend so maybe that had something to do with it but we hardly had wait times.

Disney is crowded most weekends throughout the years. For January, if you are going the week after New Years you should be fine. Weather can be very cold in the morning, as low as 36, and moderate in the afternoon 70 - 75...not too hot at all, then cooler in the evenings. You will want to keep a jacket or sweatshirt with you so you can take it off and put it on as needed...

The most crowded I've seen MK is in January. Granted it was MLK weekend, so of course it's going to be crowded. Buuut this is also considering I've been there the weekend of Christmas and Thanksgiving weekend. Not to say the parks weren't crowded those weekends. XD

We went the week after New Years this year and it was just as bad (if not worse) than the week before New Years. I really think it all depends on the school schedule here in Florida.

Re: So is January Crowded or not ?!?!

For the last few years, January has been pretty crowded. It used to be empty, but it hasn't been lately. Whether the economy keeps crowds down in January, you never know - so you can't really go by last year to know what will happen this year.

The week after New Years can be very busy. Some school systems are not yet back - that has been the case with Georgia in the past.

The marathon weekend is also fairly busy on property.

I am not sure why else January isn't as slow as other times anymore. Although we had a MC meet back in January this past year (I think on Sunday), and it wasn't horribly crowded that day.

December is busier than it used to be as well - and October (I wouldn't go by those "least crowded" dates given above at all). Generally, August into the first week of October is not busy. I was at WDW yesterday, and it seemed very slow - so it may be starting earlier than usual this year.

October into November is brisk for the Food and Wine Festival, Halloween Parties, school vacations, etc. There was a nice break right around the time the Christmas decorations went up last year - I think it was mid-November, without too many crowds.

December isn't terrible, but it's not as quiet as it once was. But again - with gas prices at nearly $4 per gallon, it might be a bit less busy this year.

Ohhh good! I'm looking forward to the potential lighter crowds when I'm there later this week.

Generally not so bad, it's crazy at the resorts (and in MGM) when the Super Soap Weekend is going on. But that doesn't effect the other parks as much.

The Epcot Food and Wine Festival is until the 9th, that tends to create more crowds at Epcot (especially over the weekends).
