      Re: 2008 Theme Park Attendance

Disney rules the world once again, dominating all markets and bringing in more visitors than most other theme park chains combined. However, their low showing at Hong Kong DL should be cause for concern. Attendance was actually up at the park this past year, but with only 4 million visitors, it is the worst performing Disney park by a large margin. Plus, the recent layoffs in the HKDL operation have all but killed the expansion plans that might have made the park more viable. So while attendance was up, the outlook is not good.

And it is good to read that DAK experienced record attendance. The park is not perfect (Chester and Hester's Dino-Rama? Puh-LEASE!), but it is very underrated by most.

The only problem with these numbers is that WDW will never be motivated to improve the Magic Kingdom if people keep flocking in droves to the park for a "diminishing by degrees" experience (thanks, Mr. Yee).

        Re: 2008 Theme Park Attendance

One more note: theme park attendance across the board was healthy, which indicates the recent economic downturn did not really hit the industry until late 2008 after most of the regional parks closed for the season (a point made in the attendance report, several times). I expect the numbers will be a lot lower in next year's report, unless things turn around soon.

My cause of concern is how fake the numbers are. Everyone who has been to TDL, even in the slow season, can tell you they pack big crowds when compared to the MK. I wonder how much money the WDC is paying under the table for these questionable surveys....

I was about to ask that same thing. There's no way that the Magic Kingdom in Orlando gets more visitors than TDL does. Methinks they do whatever it takes with the numbers to make Magic Kingdom stay on top so they can still have the thought that its the vacation kingdom of the world.

something is strange and that is for sure. what I would like to know is how they explain all the masses of people constantly filling up TDL. that park feels mega crowded at slow days, and that is with wiiide walkways. endless lines to the most simple rides... during parades and shows

Absolutely true. Like I said in the topic for HKDL attendance, TEA shorted TDR attendance by 500000 and a lot of the other numbers are puzzling.

Everland in South Korea has never had a bad year, always growing in attendance and this year, they opened up the best wooden rollercoaster in the world. Yet, according to TEA, attendance fell 8%! Then, to make that number even fishier, the water park portion of the resort GREW 11%. So what gives?

The report attributed the drop to all the construction that is occurring at the Universal parks. Also stated many folks are postponing Universal vacations until work is complete.

I know that is true for me - I'll be heading back to Universal once both Rip, Ride, Rockit & Harry Potter are complete. Too expensive for me to visit Orlando every year!

Oh yes they do. WDC without Walt Disney isn't the same as it used to be. It's run by idiots (EISNER and his dumbo statement "Small parks=success" look what happened to HKDL!!!!!).

But what would be the point in faking it and giving the magic kingdom more numbers than TDL? They're same team. I don't see the logic behind "every time I go, it's so crowded. It must have more!" Why would they have to make up these numbers? And who is behind it?

                                    Re: 2008 Theme Park Attendance

I am tired, and doing this all from memory, so I may be completely wrong on this, but here it goes.

Before the Resort expansion, Tokyo Disneyland was widely and openly touted as the world's most visited park with attendance around 16 million per year. The opening of Tokyo DisneySea caused attendance to drop to about 14 million per year (I believe OLC did release separate numbers for a couple of years). The Magic Kingdom at about this time was in the 15 million range and Disneyland in the 14 - 14.5 million range.

I can definitely see the plausibility of the Magic Kingdom jumping ahead of Tokyo Disneyland for a year or two as people go see Tokyo DisneySea for the first time.

What I find so hard to believe is this big surge the Magic Kingdom has had in recent years. What makes this more unusual is that 17 million would surpass even the supposed height of Tokyo Disneyland attendance. It just seems like a feat worth mentioning.

They aren't the same team. TDR is operated by a licensee. It's like a step-child.. part of the family but discriminated against by the evil step mother.

WDW is promoted and held by the company as it's 'crown jewel' in the public's eye. After all.. it's an entire WORLD right? They want to put it on the pedestal. Admitting that a single park that started as a CLONE of the MK with a single additional gate... can out draw an entire kingdom of 4 parks, resorts, water parks, etc... doesn't bode well.

Originally posted by Pizzapants View Post

Note these numbers are estimates, not actual turnstyle clicks. These are based on information provided by the companies. For many reasons, the companies have incentives to shape these numbers.

Even if they reported true turnstyle clicks.. there is much massaging of those numbers to remove duplicates, fill in gaps, remove overlap, etc. There is a lot of room for 'interpretation'.

Plus keep in mind OLC just posted the biggest attandance on record at TDL ever, due to it's succesful 25th anniversary year (which I have documented on pictures on the last two weekend updates here on micechat, so check that out please!! )
But Lazy.. I honestly am trying to understand your point of view.. but my experiences at both the Mk and TDL overrides it. Like Timmytimmytimmy said.. even on slow days.. TDL packs a lot of people. This past week.. things were very slow in TDL but even the Fastpasses ran out at Monsters Inc by 9:20am on opening day, april 15th... and by mid afternoon, the park was buzzing with crowds. TDL also benefits from the "after 6 passports" which are quite popular with non-AP locals. Go to either TDS or TDL around 5:30pm and see people in line at the turnstyles waiting for the clock to strike 6pm..
