  • [Pictures] Tiana's Showboat Jubilee 10/25

Just caught the first showing of Tiana's Showboat Jubilee today at the Magic Kingdom. It was a soft-opening show. The jazzy music was lovely and the travel loop, Goin Down the Bayou, very catchy. As you can see from the location, WDW's frontierland is crammed for space to watch a show like this. And while very fun, there's certainly a clash between the New Orleans style and Frontierland. In fact, an old western sounding guy gives the "Few minutes" warning.

All of the pictures, in fairly large sizes, are available here.

The riverboat is parked at the station awaiting a procession of performers and groups of guests invited to take part in the jubilee on the boat and later a meet'n'greet while it circles Tom Sawyer's Island.

Viewers are lined up along the bridge in front of Splash Mountain, the one past the drop obviously that goes along the river. This cornered with the pathway running along the river through Frontierland make up the show's viewing area.

Due to pyro fallout, this dock on Tom Sawyer's Island is cleared and an alternate dock is used to transport guests to and from the island.

Up front on the boat, a jazz band remarkably similar to the Jambalaya Jazz perform accompanied by Louis, the alligator, on trumpet. He talks and plays several solos.

Tiana and Naveem ride in up top facing forward while it travels before moving to the center of the boat for the show. The boat itself is filled with performers alongside guests taking part in the jubilee.

They wave ribbons, hold up props, and shake tambourines throughout the show after going through several costume changes.

At last the boat comes to a stop and the show begins.

Tiana kicks off the show with a number of her own

And then Louis pops in with a number of his own. Remember those props I mentioned? Well the whole ship is "filled with music."

But low and behold, Dr. Facilier appears.

He reminds us of his friends "on the other side," and Prince Naveem must choose his fortune in the cards.

But once he's gone this jubilee can continue.

Ribbons are again a flair for the grand finale, with the WDW staple for a finale...

    Pyro!

The show is over and the showboat can continue "Goin Down the Bayou." It trails off in the distance and I assume the families got to meet the characters after that point.

And yet despite the small viewing area, getting out was sure a lot easier than getting out of the studios' Fantasmic arena.

Looks like a fun little entertainment option! But, I do agree it seems a little jarring to have the New Orleans themed movie be featured in Frontierland.

              Good morning, son
              In twenty years from now
Maybe we'll both sit down and have a few beers
And I can tell you 'bout today
And how I picked you up and everything changed
              It was pain
              Sunny days and rain
I knew you'd feel the same things...

                Looks great! But two questions:

                1. How does Louie the Alligator sing? Does his mouth move, like the animated Mickeys?

                2. Is Dr. Facilier a mask or a face character? I've been dying to know but can't tell from the pictures. EDIT: looks like a face character in the close-up pictures... good choice! Still curious about Louie though.

I'm guessing the show was cloned/shoehorned, after being created for the Mark Twain and New Orleans Square at Disneyland.

I figured that, but I still think it's weird.

This show looks great! Do they use the Lilly Belle before and after the show?

Nice! But it's Prince NaveeN, not NaveeM.

I can't wait for this type of stuff to be over with. ugh.

They are pimping P&F like crazy. Even at Disney on Ice they played the trailer before the show, and they had multiple segments with characters from the movie in the show.

Well, I would argue that Disney has never needed a hit like they need one for P&tF. They haven't had a hit since Lilo & Stitch, and calling even that movie a box-office smash would be a stretch. Disney's reputation has sunken next to the stellar success of its adopted son studio, Pixar, and with P&tF, they are trying to relaunch their reputation as a maker of fine, quality animated movies. That's why even John Lasseter is involved with this project. And we Disney fans should want this movie to do well, too - if this movie succeeds financially, then that will give more credit, and therefore more clout in the WDC, to John Lasseter.

I forgot one thing in my review. If Tiana said "Dream" or something about a "Dream coming true" one more time I was going to have to send her "goin" down the bayou" face down in the river =P
