Bond set for Disney tourist accused of bomb threat - Bay News 9

LAKE BUENA VISTA (Central Florida News 13) -- A German tourist who is accused of making a bomb threat at the Magic Kingdom Sunday made his first appearance in court Monday morning.
A judge set Johan Naumann's bond at $10,000.
The Orange County Sheriff's Office said Naumann, 37, was on his way to the theme park when he told a Disney cast member he had two bombs in his backpack.
After deputies and a bomb-sniffing dog were called, no bombs were found. According to sheriff's deputies, the man claimed he was only joking.
This story is from our Bright House Networks partner, Central Florida News 13.
This should be a lesson to NEVER, EVER make jokes about that kind of stuff, no matter where you are. Because people WILL take you seriously. And you WILL be in BIG trouble.

Yeah, it might be good to make an example that this stuff can't be tolerated, real or fake.

I understand that they have to check his bag to make sure, but a theme park isn't an airport. Why press charges? Why not just make him leave the park? Since when is making a joke (albeit a stupid one) a criminal offense? It's unfair to put someone in legal trouble just to satisfy your current level of paranoia.

It is like the "Boy Who Cried Wolf" if you let people get away with joking about it more people will do it and then when someone is serious no one will believe them and people will get hurt.

                  :bang::bang::bang:

Go and joke about that at a CM and then come back to us with the results. Make sure you tell them it was only a joke too and you shouldn't be arrested because you were just messin around.

                  Hope it goes well!

Of course they would have to take it seriously, and search your bags and person. I already said that. And of course it's a stupid joke to make. I said that, too. But c'mon, once they find nothing, it's clear that it was just a joke and not a "bomb threat". I have to wonder about us as a society (and I mean North American society, not just the U.S.) when we are so knee jerk reactionary and paranoid that a joke becomes a criminal act. Sounds disturbingly Orwellian to me.

Again, when any sensible person could see that it was indeed a joke, they could have just ejected him from the park instead of throwing him into some kind of Kafkaesque legal nightmare.

I don't think employees are trained to determine what is a legit threat and what isn't. You can put it the other way and that employee let's a jokester slip by and he really has a bomb, then a lot a people get hurt and everyone questioned as to why it wasn't taken seriously.

I don't want sensible people handling security, I want people who follow the rules and procedures.

Little story from back in the day... When I was at MEPs, shipping out to boot camp, I overheard the Marine recruiter tell his recruits not to even joke about having a bomb on the plane. Although this as some time before 9/11 common sense says DO NOT JOKE ABOUT HAVING A BOMB YOU IDIOT!!!! Seriously, why would you do such a thing? If a person is dumb enough to joke about it they need to go to the pokey.
He felt like his life was some kind of dream and he sometimes wondered whose it was and whether they were enjoying it.

So let's see...aashee doesn't want sensible people in security, preferring people who just blindly follow the rules. Yep, that's what you want working security: a robot who can't even use his brain!

And Coastie, not to be outdone, thinks that people should be locked up for saying something stupid. Wow, it must be nice to be so perfect, and never do or say anything stupid yourself :thumbdown

By the way, why would you need some kind of special training to know that a guest is obviously joking in this situation? I never said they should just let him slip by. Of course they should search him, but having found nothing, the only reason he gets in legal trouble is that they labelled his joke a "bomb threat." How is it a bomb threat? In a joking way, he said he has bombs in his bag. They searched and found nothing. He explains that it was a joke, and still they insist it was a "threat"?

What if he had said he had a couple of ICBM missiles in his shorts? They would have claimed that he threatened to bring nukes into the park?

Dude, it's called COMMON SENSE. Common sense should tell you not to joke about stuff like that, especially in this day and age. As someone else posted, it's a "Boy Who Cried Wolf" scenario. Just don't do it. Adults should know better.

                                    What ???
It's a mass concentration of humanity. Threatening to harm it is in no way acceptable, joking or not. It's become clear over the years that individual nutters can, and will, occasionally carry out threats. Stopping the clowns from playing jokes, means that the real deal isn't dismissed as another nutjob.

Can you imagine a world leader offerring to nuke another country, as a joke....some things are serious and not to be joked about.

^^^^^not only that but there's a serious cost in calling out the police bringin the k-9s and running a full search of the ppark and his person...it may have been a joke but it's an expensive one..

I believe if I remember correctly it costs approx 10k to train a bomb sniffing dog, and another 15k for the peace officer that is the handler plus the up keep...so if you look at it in dollars and cents someone should pay for the cost in time etc. that it cost to bring all of those people out...and it sure as heck shouldn't be the taxpayer
