  • [Rumor] Fishy Rumored Aquarium For Pleasure Island Site

    Source: Screamscape

All though this rumor started out with an Aquarium possibly being built into Downtown Disney's Virgin Megastore...the latest rumor has a new structure being erected on the site of one of the Pleasure Island clubs, after it is demolished.

Don't know about you...exotic fish fascinate me! Regardless of where it's placed (if it is to happen), the mere thought of a new aquarium is exciting. Just hope Disney doesn't decide to open a Long John Silver's seafood restaurant beside it, as that would very much be in poor taste.

Poor Flounder. Ariel's going to miss you. *sniff*

Like the Coral Reef Restaurant inside EPCOT's Living Seas?

They already have the Living Seas, so I highly doubt this is happening.

      Yeah what is your source?

I really hope this isn't true.
      Good morning, son
      In twenty years from now
Maybe we'll both sit down and have a few beers
And I can tell you 'bout today
And how I picked you up and everything changed
      It was pain
      Sunny days and rain
I knew you'd feel the same things...

Thanks for reminding me. I put my source in the OP. I just like aquariums. Two of them at WDW would be fine with me. I must confess...Disneyland Resort could benefit from an aquarium more.

If the rumor is true, the plan would be to open a restaurant called Aquarium, not just any aquarium. It is a small chain that is part of Landry's Restaurants Inc., the same owners of Rainforest Cafes, T-Rex at Downtown Disney in Florida, and Yak & Yeti in Asia at Disney's Animal Kingdom. Their four current locations are in Kemah (near Houston), Nashville, Houston, and Denver. The last two are part of attractions that they own, called Downtown Aquarium. I have been to Downtown Aquarium Denver only, and it is a great aquarium complex; the Aquarium Restaurant has an extensive large tank on one side of the large dining room, similar to Coral Reef Restaurant and Sharks Underwater Grill but without the terraced dining arrangements.

Here is the website for Aquarium Restaurant:

          Aquarium Restaurants

          And Landry's:

          Landry's Restaurants, Inc.

Interesting. Thanx for the info and the link geomorph. A restaurant called Aquarium sounds sophisticated and cool.

Another Landry's? Why not just rename it Downtown Landry's...hope it's not true.

Here are some pictures I took last summer of the Downtown Aquarium Denver. The first is the exterior of the entire attraction and restaurant building, while the other are of the Aquarium Restaurant inside.

Wow! It's a Rainforest Cafe style of themed restaurant. The immersive atmosphere is stunning.

                    It's the same company.

It's a nice idea, and I actually once wondered if an Aquarium Restaurant would be good for PI when I went to the one in Nashville and found it was the same company as Rainforest Cafe. But I'm hesitant because I think it might defeat the purpose of Coral Reef Restaurant (at the Living Seas) by beating it at its own game, and it would be yet another Downtown Disney restaurant owned by Landry's.

But it's certainly better than empty warehouse!

That would be competition with the Coral Reef, especially because it would probably be cheaper. I wouldn't mind something like a Madame Tussauds or a Ripley's Believe it or Not (though I think there's one in Orlando already) slipping into Downtown Disney. Maybe add another mini-Golf there?

Neat idea, I would think the Ripley's Believe it or not would be better suited for the boardwalk though, side show style attractions would better fit in with the "Atlantic City Boardwalk" theme. :ap:

Geez, not another restaurant that's exactly the same overpriced food just with a different theme.

Don't get me wrong, I think Rainforest cafe and T-Rex are a good addition to Downtown Disney, I just don't think we need another. If the menu at least looked completely different being maybe seafood instead of the normal fare then I might think it a good idea, but the menus look very much the same. I really don't want Downtown Disney to just become a proofing ground for all of Landry's different restaurant ideas, I'd like something unique.

And here I was thinking that WDW was an alternative to garbage like that.

Ripley's Believe it Or Not isn't garbage. Mr. Ripley seemed to have had the same spirit as Walt himself. Walt originally intended Pirates of the Caribbean to be a wax museum, much like Madame Tussauds and Disney already has miniature golf, so I don't quite see that Disney is above any of those. There needs to be something to *do* at Downtown Disney, to get people there in the first place. They're never going to shop and eat there if they don't first have something to do there. Pleasure Island and the Adventurer's Club used to provide that, with those gone, Downtown Disney doesn't just need more shops.
