  • [Question] Hopper or Sipper pass?

I have read someone's quote that WDW is to be sipped slowly not gulped. Hopper passes can make gulping a possibility. haha It can also make sipping easier as well as you can go from one park to another sipping out what you want to do there and places you want to eat there. However, with the hopper also comes the tendency to take advantage of EMH at parks when another park would be closing. Here is my area of uncertainty:

I have 4 days to spend at the parks next summer June or July. Actually about 3 and a half.
2 FULL days. 1/2 day plus any EMH. Then maybe 3/4ths of a day the last day we are there before we drive to Ocala, FL to visit my wife's sisters.

I have devised 2 plans. One involves getting a hopper pass. The other does not.

    Plan 1: Hopper pass
    Day 1 Monday:
    1st night times approximate.
Check into WL or Dolphin approx. 3:00.
    Head to Magic Kingdom.
Eat Dinner at Columbia Harbor House or Pecco's.
Stay at MK till close at 11:00

    Day 2 Tuesday:
    9:00 arrival at AK.
(ride Everest, Dinosaur, Kali' rapids, Safari') <-- no part order.
    Head to Epcot by 2:00
(Ride space earth, test track, maelstrom, gran fiesta.) <-- definitely
(if time: soarin', living with the land, mission space)
    Le Cellier dinner at 5:30
Spend rest of the night there see Illuminations
stay for EMH if they are there on Tuesday.

    Day 3 Wednesday:
Arrive at 9:00 opening at MK
Ride as much as we can throughout the day. If we get tired, hop to another park at some point.

    Day 4: DHS
    Arrive at DHS around 10:00
Stay at DHS till around dinner time (Yes, I have no desire to see Fantasmic!)
Hop to any park, if we get bored, before 3:00. (I'll have a car to make hopping quicker)

((((Alternate option and one I've actually was leaning to before... switch DHS and AK. Start the day at DHS then hop to Epcot rather than AK to Epcot.) DHS has only like 3 attractions that really interest me: Great movie ride, rock n roller coaster, and Toy Story. (I been on ToT twice before and I've had enough of it !)

Plan 2: No hopper pass Saves me $100
    Day 1 Monday:
First night dependent on what park has EMH.
Whatever park has EMH go to around 4:00 giving me more of a 1/2 day in the park.
If MK does have EMH, that does mean I'd be there till 2:00 AM!

    Day 2 Tuesday:
If day 1 was AK or DHS, then Day 2 will be Epcot arriving about 10:00 and staying till close.
If day 1 was MK or Epcot, Day 2 will be AK. Then relaxation!

    Day 3: Wednesday
Magic Kingdom From 9:00 till they close it

Day 4: Thursday about 2/3rds of a day till dinner time.
DHS or AK whichever wasn't done already.

The problem with the second plan is advanced dining reservations.
I may have to schedule the same one for 2 days, then cancel one of them. Example 1) Prime time cafe for dinner on Monday and lunch on Thursday in case I go to DHS Monday or Thursday dependent on EMH.
Example 2.) Day 2: 50% chance it will be Epcot dependent on EMH. I can take a whim and make it Le Cellier for dinner.
Example 3.) MK will likely be Day 3 so I can make dining options there at Be Our Guest and/or Liberty Tree

I could also add the hopper option later if I feel the need. I don't know if its worth it though *shrugs*.

Hoping to raise enough money to go to DL from Pennsylvania with my wife for our 5 year anniversary. (We went there on our honeymoon!)

If you would like to contribute to the cause for a relatively poor private school teacher. Please private message me. I'd be very thankful.

I am trying to plan a 9 day: no hopping trip.
On our first day, we are heading to DHS for the short day - since there's a "Fantasmic" showing that night.

That's all I got -- for such a short trip, I'd really try to do it without hopping. $100 is a nice meal, and some great souvenirs.

wow 9 days no hopping impressive! ya I guess you just need to pick your days well and make the most of each park when you are there. $100 could go towards staying at the wilderness rather than a moderate!

If it's your first trip sipping will work. If you are a regular then Hop hop hop. We loved wishes and want to see it every night so we always get the hopper. Savin a $100 is nice but 4 days prob costing you 2-3 grand with air and everything else i'd do the hopper.

I would definitely say that the most valuable Fastpass to get is Soarin' at Epcot and Toy Story Mania at DHS. Get those first thing in the morning when you arrive to either of those parks. They will run out the earliest and have the longest wait times you ever seen at a Disney Park.

At the MK, probably get Space Mountain first (plus, it tends to break down), although Splash Mountain might be one to get first on a hot day. Peter Pan's Flight might also be one to consider, since it is a lower capacity ride and the most popular dark ride in Fantasyland.

At DAK, Fastpass isn't that useful (it tends to have lower crowds), but Kali River Rapids or the Safari is probably the best to get.

Park Hopping is the best when you visit DAK, as I see what you have planned anyway, since DAK closes earlier. Definitely hit DAK right when it opens and try to see as much animals as possible (many of the animals disappear in the afternoon). I guess single park visits works the best for the others for the first park visit, although park hopping is better when making repeat visits to a park.

Well, Tower of Terror is slightly different with the Summer Nightastic overlay. It's now a single drop profile, the 5th Dimension is now just a starfield, and the mirror effect is present before you enter the drop shaft, but that's all you would miss.

Besides, should you decide to ride it, the wait times should be shorter than Toy Story Mania and Rock n' Roller Coaster.

You might also want to hit Star Tours, since the original is closing soon, plus the wait times will be the shortest of the Fastpass attractions.

                Thanks for the fastpass info.
With EMH, DAK maybe open later at night so may DHS. Whatever park that we go to the first night we'll likely have EMH (I'll plan it that way).

At Epcot, Soarin' was equally popular in DL, and we enjoyed it but it wasn't our fave.

Animals disappear in the summer o no! Well if we get to DAK later in the day we may just miss the animals

                  Re: Hopper or Sipper pass?

The problem is this, I know that DAK will take at most half a day. MK is a park I could definitely stay a whole day in. Epcot, I don't know as I was only there for a little bit. Ride wise Epcot it seems rather limited to my tastes but the World Showcase in itself seems to eat up a lot of time. DHS, probably a half a day as well.

Here are the attractions we would like to do + any shows + any sit down maels. Can someone give me an estimate how long it would take to see those attractions at each park during an average summer day?

                  Epcot:
                  Maelstrom (Norway Pavillion)
                  Gran Fiesta Tour (Mexico Pavillion)
                  Test Track
                  Spaceship Earth
                  Soarin'(The land Pavillion)
                  Mission Space <-- if time
Living with the land (the land pavillion) --- If time
The American Adventure (Possible) American Pavillion --- if Time
                  Le Cellier dinner
                  Illuminations

                  DHS:
                  Rock n Rollercoaster (2 times)
Toy Story Midway Mania (2 times)
                  Great Movie Ride
                  The American Film Institute Showcase
American Idol Experience <-- if time
Walt Disney: One Man's Dream <-- if time

                  Animal Kingdom:
                  Dinosaur
                  Expedition Everest (2x)
                  Kilimanjaro Safari
                  Kali River Rapids (2x)
                  Maharajah Jungle Trek

                  MK:
                  Space Mountain, (2x)
                  Splash Mountain, (2x)
                  Big Thunder Mountain (2x)
                  Pirates of the Caribean (2x)
                  Buzz LIght Year (2x)
                  Peter Pan (2x)
                  People Mover (TTA)
                  Hall of Presidents
                  Jungle Cruise <-- if time
                  Train
(Be our guest dinner otherwise Columbia Harbor House / Pecco's) (If opened)
                  Liberty Tree Tavern
                  Magical!

As you can see the majority of our favorite attractions are at WDW. Of course, that is because we been to DL and using what we liked there to dictate what we will ride at WDW. As for DHS, I know what we will like as well as it has rides similiar to DCA in California. Epcot and DAK are harder to guess what will be our favorites.

Based on the breakdown of our trip if we give the 2 longer days to MK and Epcot and the 2 shorter 1/2 days to DAK and DHS (one will get EMH at night). Then hopping seems to be tough to fit in there unless the option is reserved for the 2 longer days where we may get sick of MK or Epcot.

                    Re: Hopper or Sipper pass?

this will be my 16th trip to WDW.... I'd NEVER go without having Hopper passes. EVER haha It makes the trip more laid back and you don't have to RUSH to get everything done because you can always come back the next day and the next day. Also If MK is REALLY crowded you can just hop on over to AK...and when AK closes you can just hop back to MK or another park.
My opinion is a hopper makes your trip easier, less hectic and gives you more bang for your buck

                      Re: Hopper or Sipper pass?

Good opinion. My only concern is the time it takes to hop from one park to another. I know I can prob get from one disney park to another in about 40 minutes tops since I know all the shortcuts. (see my thread on transportation optimization). However, you hop about 4 times and that kills like 4 hours out of your trip.

You would advise leaving MK midway through the day because of it being crowded and going to a less crowded park like AK? / DHS? Would you then advise returning back to MK at night?

If you start feeling like MK is too crowded for you taste, then yes I'd say "Hop away" And Returning to MK would just depend on the day, Hours (EMH?) and crowd levels.

Ive never thought that we've lost any time due to hopping...Sure there can be transit issues, but really its pretty easy to get from park to park.

That is true.. Hopper provides a nice escape route for you.

Are night time EMH worth leaving the current park and going to ? For example spend most of the day in MK. Then Epcot has EMH. Go there for the evening.

Are the crowds generally lighter in DHS on non-Fantasmic days and non-EMH days?
What about Epcot? Is it packed when there are EMH there at night or what about MK being packed at night because of EMH?
                          So many questions.. haha sorry!

Depending on what time parks close EMH could be worth it... If you are in AK (which usually closes much earlier than the other parks (before dark)...depending on time of year) then Yeah, it's worth hopping to an EMH park to get in as much as possible. I rarely take advantage of EMH though, just depends on the time of year and how late they go. We are more apt to do early EMH.

I'd say Yes, crowds are lighter on non fantasmic days, but during fantasmic the park seems empty (again--depends when you go) And, yes, Parks can be more crowded during evening EMH

I prefer to sip.......although if riding the WDW Bus system several extra hours on your vacation(and paying extra for that privilege) is your cup of tea, more power to you.

The original quote that the OP is referring to was about Disneyland and her horde of AP holders....but the author(me) likes that the phrase is getting traction in other forms

ya tough choices for me! I don't know which way I'll decide to go. If I am going to hop, I will need to plan out my hopping wisely not haphazardly which could lead to more frustration than anything. Plus I don't want to walk a ton more than I need to as hopping would require us to do. It would also eat up more time riding the Disney transportation.

I don't think using a park hopper will increase your walking.... You are either walking miles and miles through the same park all day.... or walking miles and miles in two different parks.

And I honestly feel that having hoppers gives you much more time; you can see more and do more

Well, with the current Summer Nightastic version at DHS, I feel DCA now has the better version story wise and effects wise. But of course, the 5th Dimension portion is still stronger at DHS, and it is likely once the 5th Dimension scene is returned to its full glory that DHS will once again have the best version again.
