  • [Question] What ride was it? help!!

A couple of years ago at WDW we rode an attraction that was basically a giant theater than moved through a dinosaur animatronic set. I thought it was amazing and I've never heard anyone talk about it here. I think it was Epcot...or was it the Animal Park?

Anyone know what I'm talking about? (I sure don't)
What is this attraction called? I wanted to see if there were any pictures of it around.

    Thanks

The Trip back in time to save a Dinosaur is located at Animal Kingdom, the name of the ride is "Dinosaur", which was originally called "Countdown to Extintion". Over at EPCOT, the "Universe of Energy", featuring Ellen Degeneres also has the much slower trip thru the primeval world in the x-large theater vehicles. You may be confusing one with the other? But they are similar in theme.

From the description of "giant moving theater", I'd bet it was Epcot's Universe of Energy.
Does anyone even bother with signatures anymore?

That definitely sounds like Universe of Energy. You can find lots of photos at Lost EPCOT.
I knew if this business was ever to get anywhere, if this business was ever to grow, it could never do it by having to answer to someone unsympathetic to its possibilities, by having to answer to someone with only one thought or interest, namely profits. For my idea of how to make profits has differed greatly from those who generally control businesses such as ours. I have blind faith in the policy that quality, tempered with good judgment and showmanship, will win against all odds.

Giant theater... dinosaur animatronics... Hmmm... I am almost 100% sure you are thinking of Universe of Energy!!!
Yes. We all know that I am psychic. Don't believe me? Well... I'm sensing that you like Disney. I see that look of bewilderment, hmmm?

That's the best part of Ellen's Energy Adventure and it's severly shoehorned into the ride's theme. I was struggling to stay awake through the rest of it.

Yep, has to be Universe of Energy. You probably blocked out everything but the dinosaur ride through. The rest of the attraction is films featuring Ellen and Bill Nye discussing the issue of energy, as presented by a major oil corporation. Also known as, not exactly an unbiased or useful viewpoint.

Yep! you're right. I totally forgot about the movie part, Ellen and Bill. The rest of it was pretty good. I was really blown away with the way the theater comes apart, moves through the set and then reassembles at the end.

Thanks Everyone! I was trying to explain this to my wife, she wasn't there.

The first time I was on it, the ride system blew me away! It was also a little worrisome when we didn't listen to the warnings and our party sat apart in the theater which turned into different ride vehicles. Didn't know that was gonna happen!

Ellen... anything with her just makes me sick. haha.. even if the ride has good parts I will still probably skip it just because of her being in it.

If it's any consolation, Ellen does nearly get eaten by dinosaurs in the ride portion.

Nemo in the Seas... Hmmm.. well, after riding Disneyland's Nemo subs this past weekend, I may never set foot on that puny little ride they got at EPCOT. I am telling you.. we got ROBBED!!!

Anyways...My favorite Universe of Energy memory comes from EPCOT's opening day Oct 1st, 1982. We got on Universe of Energy shortly after the opening dedication ceremony and got stuck in the primeval diorama. We all had to be escorted oout of the ride, through the privemal jungle and out the exit doors. the CMs kept it light by telling us, not to step on dino poop. LOL!!! That was my first time on the ride. Will never forget that!

The last time I saw this her AA was looking awful. I know at one point this was considered an advanced top of the line AA, but she was looking a bit rough. I can't imagine its improved with age.

Really? From what I've heard from several Disneyland regulars who have also visited EPCOT, they think *they're* the ones who got gypped with the Nemo ride.

                                  lol that's certainly how I feel :P

I'd like to hear TDLFan explain his views on this one haha.

I like the real aquarium segment and felt the projections mostly matched the sets better in the Epcot version. Also the Angler fish or whatever it was has much better movement then in DL (or at least it appeared that way on my trips). I might point to the whale as being a fairly nonsensical point int he ride.

the DL version has a very bland/slow queue and the projections didn't seem to match up to me. The DL version overall seemed to lack a "wow" moment. Kinda felt like watching TV under water to me.

Then again they both have the same very underwhelming plot, I'd really hoped for more as far as that went.

Exactly. The KUKA anglerfish, the closer proximity of the sets, and the incorporation of live fish with the characters are examples of very good aspects of only WDW's Nemo. Disneyland has the subs, an extended ride, and the volcano. It just comes down to personal preference. I can understand people preferring the nostalgia offered by the subs. For me personally, Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage makes me miss the original Submarine Voyage terribly, to the point I can't enjoy the Nemo version at all.

I already explained myself on this issue in my trip report from DLR, which is found on the DL section here on Micechat. But in less than one sentence, I can tell you that I appreciated the more authentic underwater feel of the DL ride, over the "dry" aspect of the FL version, which feels "fake" and where you have to put up with other guests' camera flash going off repeatedly. Besides, there is more to see in DL's version over CA's. If people from CA differ on this is because they don't appreciate what they have over there, maybe why they continue to waste their money coming to WDW? Besdies, good luck watching the anglerfish in motion. the few times I have ridden this toddlers' turkey, that prop has been inop.

I think theres always curiosity to see something different. WDW certainly is growing in disappointments but I never turn down a theme park trip

I consider myself a California goer as that is were most of my dads side of the family lives and they are more theme park friendly. My moms side of the family lives in the south though and wanted to spend more time so I got a few WDW offers and went with them for New Years.

I can see were both our opinions have their valid points though.

Angler fish worked both years I went to WDW (Christmas time 2008 and 2009 respectively) also tradition both those years was being evacuated from the attraction the thread opener is mentioning. I was evacuated in 2008 in the theater after the DInosoar Scene, before the transition to the finale. In 2009 I was evacuated in the Dinosoar scene. Lol in fact I don't think I've ever finished the Ellen edition of the ride considering the visit I made before that I was a seven.

Nemo is enjoyable and I can't bring myself to hate on it when WDW runs the abysmal Great Movie Ride and Pirates feels not only short but somehow stiff? I dunno the movement wasn't as convincing for me haha. Loved Mansion and Spaceship Earth but I suppose I shouldn't make this thread about appraising things (just listing the two that nearly throw me into a blind rage for reasons that confuse your average human).
