That's what I thought too, but the CM who we were talking to said that somehow, the electrical systems are connected. Also, I think ToT was affected as well. From what I remember, people actually got stuck... That would be terrifying as well...

Anyway, I could be wrong, but I'm just going off of what the CM said. If anyone here is a CM and remembers that day, (sometime in July of last year, SM was down for refurb at that time) then let me know. I'd like to know if my memory serves me correct.

i know they close big thunder mountain and splash mountain.

we were just @ disney world a few days ago. it was raining really hard, so me and my family were waiting under the fastpass machines @ big thunder mountain during the rain. the cast members were playing disney trivia and giving out fast passes. a cast member told me that they will run the rides in the rain but they keep them closed until the lightning is 15-20 miles away.

    hope that helps!

In LIGHTNING, ALL attractions go down regardless if they are indoor or outdoor. And yes, I am a CM. I worked at Pirates, where we closed due to lightning.
Hmm, I would get clarification on this if I were you. I've seen plenty of outdoor attractions go down during lightning but all the indoor attractions were open to enjoy.

In Florida, if what you say is true then the parks would be closed the majority of the time during the Summer.

No, it is only outdoor rides that are not covered. Are you really a cm? You should know this stuff.

Which is kind of a bummer because in the summer Florida gets thunderstorms like clockwork everyday. 3PM that's when i rolls in. An hour later, it clears up then the attractions re-open.

Teacups only close due to weather if the exit gates are blocked by guests, and the CM's working there cannot move the guests because Teacups is a rain shelter.

All outdoor attractions close due to weather.

On a semi-related note, a CM at Rockin' Roller Coaster was moving a chain in the line and lightening hit different chain in the line and she had some problems with that. She ended up being fine and never left rotation. Sooooo even though there are lightening rods everywhere that really doesn't mean much.

    @yoyoflamingo

You obviously missed the sarcastic nature of my comment. I have never seen them close down the indoor attractions because of a thunder storm, even when it was monsooning outside.

I guess I wouldn't be surprised now about the rods. I took the Keys to the Kingdom tour today and learned that there are lightning rods on the buildings. Now of course I notice them.

I also hear from another guest on the tour that Tinker Bell doesn't perform in the fireworks show when lightning is out.

Everything indoors remains open. As far as I know, covered outdoor attractions (Mad Tea Party) remain open, uncovered (Dumbo) close. Fireworks, and depending on severity of the storm, parades, go on as usual; although these aren't often impacted as the storm nearly always ends before the evening.

Are you sure they didn't mean all outdoor attractions? Because I have ridden plenty of indoor attractions during lightning storms in WDW...

No one is escorted out of the parks, including the water parks. And it is only about 3-4 miles, but they follow it closely.

    From what I remember:

    Expedition Everest
    Kali River Rapids
    Test Track
    Splash Mountain
    Big Thunder Mountain
    Astro Orbiter
    Tower of Terror

From other sources: Dumbo, Magic Carpets, the Treehouse, Tomorrowland Speedway, the Jungle Cruise, and the Riverboat also close during lightning. I don't remember all of these closing, especially Jungle Cruise and the Riverboat, so I'm not 100% sure...

Thanks! I only say except a few because I do know that the teacups probably do operate.
