  • News New Orlando Thrill Park Planned for 2013

Just what Orlando needs . . . more competition for the tourist dollar.

The new park titled, Orlando Thrill Park, hopes to fill a niche left open by a lack of a pure thrill and unthemed coaster park in the Orlando Area. While it is true that there isn't a pure coaster park in the area, there are plenty of excellent and well themed coasters in Orlando at Sea World, Universal, Disney and 8 more just down the road in Tampa at Busch Gardens.

The park will open with 14 proposed rides. Our good friend Brady at the LA Times Funland Blog has a photo gallery of the proposed attractions and an excellent article on the new park.

Orlando Thrill Park would have no themed environments, no costumed characters, no dark rides and few if any shows, Bell said. Instead, it would be all about the biggest, tallest, fastest, longest, steepest and greatest thrills.

Well, what do you think? Does Orlando need a "Thrill Park"? Or is the type of tourist drawn to Orlando looking for Disney/Universal style themed entertainment?

Another one? Orlando is going to start scaring people off with TOO much to do!

And a lot of those look like they belong at a carnival, not a premium priced amusement park.

        Google Maps

This is a link to the google map location of where this park will be located. I have been following this plan through development. That part of I-Drive would be perfect for an attraction of this nature.

This park would do well IMO operating from 1pm - 2am.

There is a reason why Magical Midway, Fun Spot, Old Town and those mid sized attractions do well here in Orlando. They fill a thrill niche.

I just can't see this working out in Orlando. If it were in some other city...one WITHOUT WDW, Universal, SeaWorld, etc. perhaps.

This will probably have little to no effect on any of the major themed resorts... This is just another sideshow along International drive that if people have a half of day or maybe locals looking for something to do will check out. If it has a good business model , it will work but otherwise its just a waste of money .

I 100% agree. I think that this will put things like Fun Spot, Magical Midway, and Old Town out of business vs. impacting Universal/SeaWorld/WDW

Orlando draws a lot of tourists and retired people. While thrill rides may be a valid niche, I think that those traveling to Orlando expect at least a Sea World level of theme. I'm not sure that a pure unthemed thrill park will be able to cover the hundreds of millions of dollars that it will take to buy the attractions and build the necessary infrastructure. I just don't see how they can succeed without at least an attempt at an interesting theme to pull the place together. Just my thoughts.

I do agree. But I think if they are open hours when the other parks are closed it will be a success.

It looks like they found the guy with the high score in Roller Coaster Tycoon and gave him a job.

I guess it depends a lot on their pricing model - if they can price it so 'walk ups' will be lured in without feeling like they've dedicated their whole day to it.

Magical Midway is ghetto! I've been there a few times and didn't stay long because it just didn't feel safe. It felt like some kind of gang action or drug deal gone bad was on the verge of happening. I felt safer at the Buffalo Wild Wings across the street.

No theme? Kinda like six flags without bugs Bunny? That's a pretty unattractive idea, I wonder how it will do.

8 coasters, and none that focus on airtime? Which we need? *sigh*

Well it would be a step up for the surrounding neighborhood...

I am not too familiar with Orlando yet, but my coworkers' main comment about the location is that Tangelo Park is not known as a safe neighborhood. If that's true, I hope that changes.

Are those amusement parks you mentioned overrun by gangs of teens? That happened to the amusement parks back home. The atmosphere of a teen hangout isn't too appealing to most tourists.
