I am looking for information ont he monorail fire from the late 80's. I do not rember the exact date, but if anyone know where I can find info, pics, video, ect. it would be very helpful.
all I know from previous boards... Tired broke... which started the fire.... those in the cabins affected somehow got to the roof, the Reedycreek fire Rescue brought a truck & so did another agency.....
In the end they got everyone safe.... they blocked the view from cars.. and tried to keep it a secret..... the monorail was towed to the shed and inspected and those inspections were used latter for recomendations that went tinot the Mark IV monorail......
i have a picture of the monorail on fire. not sure where it is. tucked away in a box somewhere.
i can tell you a few things about it. happened on the Epcot beam. monorail gold. tire deflated and friction resulted in a fire. everyone evacuated. they used to let the monorail pilots listn to the actual radio transmission of the event. management only let monorail employees listen to the tape when they got promoted to "lead". since then the "lead" positions have vanished from what i've heard so i don't know who gets to listen to it.
i also know of 4 other monorail incidents. ever hear of the commercial they were filming in the early 90's with monorail red. the tractor holding the camera crew stalled outside contemporary's blind spot and the impact caused the camera to crash through the windsheild. pretty interesting stuff.
ever hear of the plane that crashed into Epcot's parking lot and took out a few cars and a light pole? how about the ferry running over one of the water sprites?
all this was public information and can be found in the newspapers.
you can find all that and sooooo much more if you access the Orlando-Sentinel newspaper archives. i researched "accidents" and "lawsuits" and found tons of stories and photos involving guest deaths, plane crash, and all kinds of accidents. i personally found the OS articles at UCF's media center for free.
one thing i never researched was local TV news coverages on the incidents. i'm 100% sure they had video of it all, so it's probably archived. that would be neat to watch.
i also worked at WDW and know of stories firsthand by talking to cast members involved in the incidents.
i knew the guy who drove monorail red during the commercial accident and the supervisor who was on the tractor when it happened.
if i remember correctly, the fire was in 1985 and the commercial accident wasin 1991. there was a 1974 accident (i think) involving monorail blue and red colliding. the 194 story is the only story i don't know for sure.
there's also a book out called Mousetales or something like that with news/rumors from Disneyland. i haven't seen anything specifically on WDW. where did you read about the ferry incident? i read it in the newspaper.
the monorail fire made front page. HUGE photo with the train blazing on fire. really good pic. should be easy to find the OS newspaper article. mine was in black and white (UCF microfiche circa 1991 before the internet was popularized). if you happen to find a colored version or any news video clips, please send me a copy....
