Disney Space Mountain closed: Disney World's Space Mountain shut down after woman found unconscious - OrlandoSentinel.com

By Anika Myers Palm, Orlando Sentinel 3:13 p.m. EDT, May 21, 2011

A woman was transported to a hospital today after she was found unconscious on the Space Mountain ride at Walt Disney World.

    The ride remains closed.

Reedy Creek Emergency Services, which handles medical emergencies for Disney's parks, transported the unconscious 48-year-old woman to Dr. Phillips Hospital about 11:30 a.m.
    Her current condition is unknown.

"Our thoughts and concerns are with the guest and her family," said Andrea Finger, a Disney spokeswoman. "We have sent a representative to the hospital to assist them with their needs."

After technicians have finished inspecting the ride, it will be reopened to other guests, she said.
Check back for updates on this developing story.

Speaking with a paramedic as this news broke, and they said that sort of statement isn't the type a company makes when the person is alive.

Why would they need to close the ride? My guess is that she just fainted because the ride was to much for her to handle.

              Space Mountain only goes 27MPH.

I'm betting she had a pre-existing condition and the family is probably going to try to sue Disney now. *facepalm*

Most likely that's the case, but Disney is smart to always play it safe with these kinds of things. Shut it down and run all the safety tests and be sure before letting guests on again.

You are probably right on that. Either she had a pre-existing condition or was probably dehydrated from the heat, it was quite hot today. My guess though is a pre-existing condition and could have been from anything, dehydration., low blood sugar etc. People don't realize eat or drink right when they are on vacation.

Was there today...it was INSANELY hot today. I have a strong feeling she didnt get enough water and sitting just made her body just sleep.

                    Imagination is just the start

The reason why they inspect the ride is not only to make sure that the ride isn't faulty, it's to protect them if she comes back and sues the company. Plus, you can't be overly cautious when it comes to this.

And Disney will quietly settle out of court.

My Mom fainted on Big Thunder Mountain in '83. Dad was scared to death, but she woke up before the end of the ride. It later turned out that she had very mildly high blood pressure she didn't know about, combined with just being tired from the trip.

I don't know about that - If they think they're in the wrong, they'll settle. But if they know it wasn't their fault, they'll fight it - and they tend to win those. They don't necessarily role over for every suit that gets brought against them.

Hopefully, this woman will recover and whatever medical issues she has will be properly diagnosed and treated. (although if they took her to the emergency clinic run by Florida hospital over near Downtown Disney, she'll be bankrupt before she gets out of there-poor woman)
