  • [Question] Do you think the castle looks better with the two patterns in the shingles?

I just noticed the patterns in two of the blue shingle sections in the castle.
The upper one has a zig zag pattern like the black stripe on Charlie Brown’s shirt,
and the lower one has a diamond pattern.

    Do you like these?

    When were they added?

I just Googled the castle and May 2001 photos shows that they were just blue.
I though it looked even better back then.

What (apart from my need to "Get a life!") do you think?
I prefer the lower diamond pattern to the Charlie Brown stripe,
so maybe if they both had that, and maybe if they were more subtle by having a closer shade of blue.
I also think that patterns (again, subtle & closer in color) might look better in the many blue cones that cover the castle.

I believe they repainted the shingles right after Disneyland's 50th celebration.

    EDIT: They repainted in 2007.

BTW, I think the patterns are sexy.

The patterns were added a few years ago to make the castle more resemble its early concept art, created by Imagineering legend Herb Ryman.

Here is one of the earliest Ryman pieces, made in the late 60s (look closely):

Here is a larger and earlier sketch (1967), which even more closely resembles the new design:

So yeah, I quite like it... but as a Herb Ryman fan, I'm a bit biased.

I like the newer shingles, and even more so, now that I know a little bit more about the back story. (Thanks previous poster!)
