So Orlando is getting a monorail eventually which will connect the airport to the convention center, international drive, and the new SunRail development with plans to eventually expand to Disney World.

Many want Disney to expand its own monorail and have often wondered the price it would take. Now here's a comparable number that can be used to see just how much it would cost for monorail extensions to Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, Downtown Disney, etc.

I don't really believe those numbers. The numbers are proposed by a company trying to get Orlando to build one and who has as of yet never successfully implemented construction of a monorail. It is highly likely that the costs would balloon once the project began.

Not to mention that they are also proposing a different technology, maglev, than what is at use at Walt Disney World. This is also not a done deal, still just a proposal.

There is actually another thread about this that was posted in the Disneyland Resort since the story below is about Anaheim ending their look at monorail.

I'm not saying that the prices are accurate but it is interesting how it would cost that per mile.

Think: it's 6 miles from the TTC to Animal Kingdom, 4 miles from the TTC to Hollywood Studios, and 6 miles from the TTC to Downtown Disney. If it was true that it cost $20 million then it would be under $500 million to connect all the areas. I know it's not going to happen/the prices may not be right but it is interesting to think about.

I would be so happy if it did happen. Also this is the price thats been rumored at for some time now.

While having everything go to the Transportation & Ticket Center makes for the easiest system for tourists to understand, a lot of distance and travel time can be cut out if the main station was somewhere more centrally located, like Epcot.

Never noticed it before but that Reedy Creek Services facility is smack dab in the middle of the parks. Prime location, so it's good for an emergency center =P

Anyways, the "world"-wide monorail would only make sense if it went to the resorts because it would mostly affect people wanting to park hop and then go straight back to their hotel without having to go then get back to their car at some other park. Having the monorail transportation would certainly make that option more attractive but it's not the biggest use-case in my mind. A centralized giant parking lot, bigger than both the TTC and Epcot parking lots, would change things but be so ridiculously massive that I just don't see it.

My main interest in something like this would be just to get rid of that giant bus system. Although besides resort guests, College Program kids would love the heck out of it.

I just want to know how much of that $20mil is actual construction and trains purchase vs. land surveys and EIRs. I would think all of WDW property has been surveyed ad nauseum and they'd be ready to go as far as designing where the beams would be built, so most of what should be left should just be the true cost of construction plus associated infrastructure.

I wonder what the actual cost of running the buses for the next twenty-thirty years and gas prices vs the cost of a complete monorail expansion upgrade and overhaul and how close that number would actually compare. Perhaps a billion for the monorails? I know I much rather do that.
