  • [Question] Voyage of the Little Mermaid: Different than DCA?

Disney has not revealed too much about exactly how the inside (the "ride", not the queue) of this version of the attraction will look. What kind of differences do you think there will be, if any?

In my own opinion, I was not very impressed with the DCA attraction: I found many scenes to be too static or too brightly lit. For example, the "Under the Sea" scene had lots of space and yet, after about 30 seconds, I felt as if I had absorbed everything in the room. I felt it could have been blacklit with lots of movement. I also noticed many guests were exiting the ride with similar disappointments.

What do you guys think? I would love to see a focus on different scenes, darker lighting choices, and some more kinestetic effects that would add more movement to the scenes. They don't have to be grand, just subtle effects. Would love to know what you think.

It's going to be the exact same ride.

No differences, but WDW's will have the newer Ariel figure that recently replaced the Ariel ice cream hair in DCA.

It's unfortunate if they don't fix the obvious mistakes DCA's has.
WDW has a chance to make the ride great, it's sad they don't do so.

Yikes. All this grand facade for a (in my opinion) mediocre attraction. I think Disney could have done a lot better here. Ah well. On a positive note, I think the queue looks really neat from the promo photos!

BTW: I absolutely LOVE that demo version of the ride floating around on youtube. Even though the story is out of sequence, I just think it's brilliant!

          I agree :-)

I have to admit, many people were getting off of it, looking at each other like, "Really??" I don't think it even needs tons more "money" spent on it, per se, but just some better lighting and maybe some gentle, flowing cloth-like movemnts of the sea. I dunno, it felt like a half-effort.

I think the queue looks much better than DCAs but DCA's fits the theme of the land, so it isn't exactly bad.

Yeah, the lighting is really unfortunate. It needs someone like a Claude Coats, who knows about animation backgrounds, stage lighting, and set construction, to give it an overhaul. The black light technology and traditional stagecraft of Snow White's Scary Adventure and Peter Pan's Flight is so simple, yet so very effective. I think the Little Mermaid scenes could be very charming in the right setting.

I understand that the Omnimover makes it challenging, because you can't go through a door and have it close behind you. And in California, they didn't have enough space to take you through a preshow or postshow room that would keep outdoor light from bleeding into the fist and last show scenes. But they do have that luxury in Florida, and it's a shame if they don't take advantage of it.

Props to Lasseter for insisting that they go in and fix some of the most egregious stuff like the projections and the Dolw Whip hair, though.

At the risk of sounding like a pollyanna, I really like TLM in DCA. I never expected it to be an E ticket or even a D. What we got I think was a solid C+, and I think it'll do very well in Florida. Now, could they have done it better? Probably. But for what it is, and for the scope of its intended target, it works extremely well.

Course, I also liked Superstar Limo, so maybe I AM a pollyanna . . .

I actually don't have much of a problem with the attraction. It works for what it is.

I actually really enjoy TLM at DCA and have no problem with it. I see why others don't love it but none of those issues really bother me.

Personally I adore TLM in DCA but I think it's because I'm an Ariel fanatic and the AA's are pretty spectacular on their own..
