  • [Chat] Disney World vs the Magic Kingdom

A question, when you hear someone say they're going to Disney World do you think of the Magic Kingdom or the resort as a whole? From what I've experienced most people rarely refer to the Magic Kingdom by name and instead use Disney World as its name much like Disneyland. I myself say Magic Kingdom and think of "Disney World" as the entire resort.

For many of us, it's a function of age - there was a time when the only thing at Disney World was the Magic Kingdom (and two hotels). They were synonymous for a decade.

Me, too. When I think of WDW, I think of the resort as a whole. As for the castle park, I call it the Magic Kingdom.
      My top favorite Disneyland attractions:

      1. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
      2. Pirates of the Caribbean
      3. Splash Mountain
      4. Mad Tea Party
      5. Peter Pan's Flight
      6. Roger Rabbit's Car Toon Spin

When I visited Disney World with my friend Annette recently, she often called the Magic Kingdom, Disney World.

I find that most non-hardcore fans call the Magic Kingdom "Disney World".

When I was a kid, I probably thought of the Magic Kingdom because MK at EPCOT Center were the only parks. I tend to think of the whole resort now, though. Although I never say anything, it does grate on my nerves a bit when I hear people refer to either WDW or DL as just "Disney."

When im asked where im going, I say Disney World. When im there and someone asks what park we are doing, I say MK. Now, if someone asks on the day we are doing HS, im more apt to say "MGM"......lol

I still call it MGM as well. Although on my last Disney World trip, we only visited Epcot, and Magic Kingdom.

I still can't bring myself to not write EPCOT in all caps, although I have weaned myself from adding "Center."

You have no idea. Take this...

In 1981 they came out with the Magic Kingdom College Program.
A year later they had to re-name it to the Walt Disney World College Program.

Not me, I call it "the Studios".

I personally think of the entire resort. To be sure of what the speaker is referring to, I usually ask a question of my own, which park are you going to first? If they respond "Disney World" Oh boy!

Both of these explain it best. Although I personally refer to the resort as a whole as WDW and the park where "the castle" is as the MK, it doesn't bother me if someone refers to the MK as "Disney World."

Now, when someone calls the park in California "Disney World" or the park in Florida "Disneyland"...

My family and I went to Disney World for the first time in 1985, so we referred to it as Disney World and Epcot Center. So every once in a while I still catch myself calling the Magic Kingdom, Disney World.

When I hear "Walt Disney World", I think of the resort as whole. When referring to EPCOT I use all caps to symbolize that it is an acronym. And I occasionally find myself calling Hollywood Studios the MGM Studios.
