  • News 50th Anniversary if WDW

Tomorrow November 22, marks the 50th anniversary of WDW and the Orlando Sentinel sent out this nice article describing what the area looked like when it opened and what it is today. I haven't yet read all of it but what I did read so far was pretty nice. What I found interesting was the census data of Kissimmee, Orlando, and the surrounding counties showing what the populations were like on opening day.

    Orlando Sentinel

Go to Orlandosentinel.com if the link doesn't work and look for the article there.

Great Article, the writer is a Disney Geek who probably got an opportunity to write about his love.

At first I was like: Ummmm a little too early there.
But when I read the article it dawned on me, very interesting read.

I was also pretty confused too seeing that this was the exact same day that JFK was assassinated. Awkward timing...

Well, they didn't know that was going to happen.

On the "Magic Kingdom: Imagineering the Magic" DVD, they talk about how they learned about the assassination and had a long quiet flight back to California. Walt finally broke the silence saying, "Well, that's the place. Central Florida".
It bothers me when people selectively edit quotes to support whatever point they are trying to prove.

This was also the day before "Dr. Who" debuted on the BBC. That's three(3) significant pop-culture, or historical events that happened within the same period of less than 48 hours. And 50 years later, JFK is still on everyone's mind, Dr. Who must be more popular then ever, and attendance at WDW is just about a high as it's ever been.
I think I remember reading that Walt and his entourage were in New Orleans, maybe on a layover when they heard the news of the assassination.
