  • What's Wrong With Space Mountain?

I just got back from WDW the other day, and something at Magic Kingdom caught my attention.

Space Mountain looks like it stepped in mud or something. I thought they were just touching up the paint or something, but when I returned to Magic Kingdom 3 days later, it was the same mix of colors. The top is brilliant white, and the bottom is muddy tan. Does anyone know anything about this change? Please tell me they're not going to paint it Disneyland's (failed) color scheme...
Finally, a place to come out of the Disney closet.

A little?!? I would say A LOT! This is the oldest and first Space Mountain ever built still looks pretty much the same it did back in 1974. This is the one single ride that needs massive changes. A new track, new trains, new special effects, new *everything*. Since having the pleasure of riding HKDL's, DLP's, and the newer version of DL's...our WDW Space Mountain is hopelessly outdated and a heck of a rough ride. TDL's could use a re-touch as well... but at least it looks better on the outside and inside unlike WDW's.

TDLFAN i do nto understand your obsession w/ reahbbinbg SPACE. Yes show wise it needs help but THATS IT. Do we really need at super duper DL clone rehab? Not to mention this is the FIRST Space, from '75, one of the few things in MK from the 70s. Lets keep some of that time. TO know what WED and what WED looked like back then.

Huh. I love Space Mountain. It's not as grand as Disneyland's (the only other one i've been on.) But it's still fun! I mean, you're in a rocket zipping around in space. I really like the ride, but if they had to do anything, I'd say add more star projectors everywhere like they did at Disneyland. Other than that, i really like it's uniqueness.

Re: What's Wrong With Space Mountain?

Disney isn't about nostalgia. You wouldn't put asbestos in your house or use "brain tonic" from the 1800's just because it's from the past would you?

The fact is that Space Mountain is way past due for a move into the modern. The queue with the hexagonal tunnels made out of vinyl gutter material is pretty lame now. You're telling me you'd prefer our space moutain over say... oh... Disneyland Paris? Man. I love the ride itself, but even I have to agree that there are certain things that just do not support what it is.

For one, the single rider-per-row factor is pretty bad. When my family went with me to WDW one time, no one enjoyed the ride because we were so worried about our 5 year old brother riding by himself in a row. I know many people feel the same.

Second, it's expensive to run that dual track. Lift hills are a beeyotch to maintain and having two that simultaneously run like that is pretty frustrating when it's not necessarily needed.

There is no sound on the ride, except for the blast tunnel. It cheapens the experience.

I'm all about nostalgia, but Disney isn't. If you want a look back into WED, ride the Carousel of Progress or join the people writing the Disney company to have the CoP put into the Smithsonian.

Good! I know that the only thing people loved about the 98 makeover was Dick Dale, but I like my Space Mountain with no music. Although WDW's isn't the same track, at least the effect is there. I know I'm going against popular opinion here, but so be it.

Its time to gut that sucker. I don't even go on it anymore because its so old and rickety and its the lamest of all the space mountains out there.

And constant maintainance failures, and wheel bearings screeching, welds breaking, and money being wasted. Ahhh.. space sure sounds awesome!

I like how you say "we". Yes, I must agree with TDLFAN. It's NEEDED. Apparently you don't get out to other Disney parks much. This Space Mountain is really just a waste of time. Considering so many people view it as the best Disney attraction.. and c'mon! We all know Disney does things better now.

Oh come on, I don't hear anything like that at Everest. I'm not saying Space shouldn't be changed, it's like what would have happened if the Matterhorn didn't have all those refurbs through the 90s to keep it in top shape. I'm just saying that I don't want butt rock in my ear during the ride.

Imagine something like Everest meets Disneyland's Space. Backwards/forwards motion, better visual effects during the ride, etc. Go ahead with the sound effects of the comets buzzing by and stuff, just PLEASE no musical score!

I'd love to see this in real life...the only photo makes it just look like sunset it effecting it's colors.

And I agree with Mickey Mania, no music. No new track layout. I could go for a rebuilt to smooth it out...but I don't want music and new effects and all. I love my Space Mountain as it is.

C'mon, Slipknot with a frontman guest appearance of Scott Stapp and a couple of guys from the band RATT. Space is awesome!

No, but seriously. You should look at DLParis. I wouldn't mind a Illuminations type score or a John Williams/Apollo 13 type score.

The musical score for Mission Space is awesome too, too bad no one hears it over Gary Sinise's voice. The music in the briefing is particularly good.
