WDW Castle to get Royal Treatment

If this is a regular 18 month overlay, then I think it is an ok thing. I really like the concept art. Nicer than the crows that the Disneyland castle is getting. The key is that the castle needs to look good in your vacation photos. People complain when something is closed or looks ugly. Like the big pink cake that they change the castle into for the anniversary.

Though I hope thye do this: "Tastfully" if they do attempt to do it.... and REMOVE IT at the end of the celebration... They have been having a hard time doing that lately.. Hand and hat are examples....

They're giving the WDW castle a new look for DL's 50th? Hope I'm not the only one who finds that odd. It's actually one of the best overlays they've done in recent memory. My only complaints are Peter & Wendy are a little too big compared to the other things and the projection screen is a bit much and will probably look bad during the day.

It does add some life to the Castle, though, which it could benefit from. No offense, Floridians, I think your castle is elegant and most resembles an actual castle, but it could use some more personality.

Dl's 50th celebration is a celebration for all the theme parks with new rides and such. It's called "The Happiest Celebration on Earth." You can check out my page (link at the bottom) for photo updates when they start putting the overlay up. My friend is going to be a CM down there. He leaves next Sunday, and he will be able to help me to keep u up to date on it. I am sure that Kevin Yee will post updates as well.

PS- I thought the Cakestle was the most putrid thing I have ever seen!

I happen to think the concept art for this overlay looks really good. I don't so much mind that WDW is getting their castle reworked in honor of Disneyland's 50th Anniversary, but I am a little bugged that it looks like a far better overlay than Disneyland itself is getting.

Oh, well - guess I shouldn't complain. Sleeping Beauty Castle looks the best it has in years. And Cinderella Castle needs all the help it can get.

For the most part, I agree. I think it looks much classier than giant crooked crowns. The only part I'm not sure I like is the giant screen with images of the other castles. Sort of like a misplaced billboard for the other parks.

If you thin k about WDW is getting better everything than DL for the 50th. New attractions, better castle, everything. You have to think about what kinda money WDW must bring in. It has to bring in much more then DL. WDW is the biggest money pit park in the world!!!!!

WDW is the more popular money maker for the company.... it has room, everyone knows it.... DL is only the classic....

DL however is begining to get the treatment... But WDW is still the star in a lot of people's minds...

Two Comments

1. When I worked in WDW Resort Ops, one of my managers told me that he attended a meeting where the plans for the Millenium(sp) celebration were to be discussed by S&M (Sales & Marketing*). When the meeting was first conveined(sp), someone chimmed in right off the bat - we don't care what you're going to do to the castle as long as you don't paint it pink.

2. I personally like the concept of a dressed up castle.

Yes, WDW is a huge cash cow. Multiple 28,000 rooms by 60% occupancy by $150 (average room rate) and that's a conservative estimate of the revenue earned by resorts on a SINGLE night.

I think the height of Cinderella Castle helps in making this overlay look attractive. When I saw the concept art for Sleeping Beauty Castle, I felt like it made the castle look tiny! And if it is an 18-month overlay, I'd be happy because I'd love to see it in person when I hope to go next January.

Although I think decorating Cinderella's castle is odd, seeing as how it's Disneyland's birthday, I think it'll probably be one of the only times WDW will advertise a trip to Disneyland in a major way. Usually, it seems, it's the other way around. The focus seems to be always be on WDW because of its size.

I kinda like it, pretty but not too over the top. I do like the references to the Disney movies, Peter Pan and Wendy at the top of the castle seems particularly nice. And as I sure most people would say, much better then the birthday cake!

I think it's a little overdone, but still nice. Only decoration that wasn't overdone for a celebration was the Millennium Cellebration mickey wand.

WDW Castle

I have to say that is does bother me when WDW gets something better than DL. But I think the new Castle for WDW looks great and could never be done on the DL castle, they are very different. I just hope it turns out as good as the pictures. I think we all remember how good DL's new Tomorrowland looked in pictures before it was built. hmmm...

It was the 25th anniversary... (and yes.. it was bad with the baloons over the spires... and that color..)

the only good thing out of it was when they repainted it they went to a make the concrete look like bricks on the castle.... but it needs to be repainted next year... (faiding.. at least the roofs got painted bright blue again a few years ago....)
