  • A look back: What was planned, & What was.

I was just playing around and I ended up at a site and I was looking back through early 1999 at everything planned for the Millenium Celebration.

    What was planned:

-A Father time AA outside Spaceship Earth.

-A 3 Caballeros retooling of El Rio Del Tiempo.

-A new sit down restaurant in the American Adventure.

-A new pavillion with South America as the host.

    -Innoventions pre-show.

    -Retooling of Imagination.

-Redo of Centorium to become MouseGear.

    -Millenium Central in Innoventions plaza.

    -Many country pavillion in WS.

    -Tapestry of Nations, two versions.

    -New Illuminations.

    -World Showcase Lagoon light show.

    -Millenium Wand.

    What was:

    -Innoventions pre-show.

    -Retooling of Imagination.

-Redo of Centorium to become MouseGear.

    -Millenium Central in Innoventions plaza.

-Many country pavillion in WS, home to 25 countries, mostly paid for by all the sponsors, including North Korea.

-Tapestry of Nations, two versions...soon mixed into one.

    -New Illuminations.

    -Millenium Wand.

Interesting no? All things go through design phases, but to me it looks like if it wasn't overly marketable, or if it was new and didn't have a sponsor it was cut. No father time, No new El Rio (thank god).

No new pavillion for South America. Interesting to look back at what never made it, especially as we go forward looking to see what will happen for EPCOT's 25th anniversary in 2007.

One problem with the South America pavillion... South America is a CONTINENT, not a single country like the other pavillions.

A 3 Caballeros retooling of El Rio Del Tiempo.
I heard somewhere this is actually still possibly still in the works. Whenever I go on that ride the first thing that pops in my head is that movie anyway so it would definitely work.

I really hope they don't do that. I love El Rio Del Tiempo and it's the last place with If You Had Wings video.

I heard about the fater time figure, which I think couldn't never happen, and was probably confused this with the Sage of Time in ToN.

World Showcase lagoon show became the new Illuminations.
...a vaguely celtic music fills the air...

I'd think that would be great. El Rio is the most boring Disney ride I've seen yet anyway (although I'm sure Superstar Limo was worse, it probably wasn't by much.)

I'm sorry a South American country pavillion.

Maybe, though that could explain why the old EPCOT fountain was taken out and a flat fountain was put in it's place. Or someone really thought it was a better design.

Yeah I guess, but this was a laser light show which would happen at dusk with mirrors on the water and the islands were supposed to be replicas of the Taj Mahal and the Parthenon.

I agree about the foutnain, I do miss the old glass but the new design with the rocks is cool. The main problem with the father time AA is that it's out doors, unless the thing goes down into the fountain when not in use and it's only part of a "show", then it could work.

I did hear about a show like that, but again, I think budgest were cut and it was merged in with Illuminations and Tapestry of Nations.

Another thing to note is that after the whole Test Track issue back in '97, the ride was pushed so far back that Disney billed it up to be one of the "highlights" of the Millennium Celebration, especially after how bad JIYI turned out to be.

Yeah good old Pressler. I don't remember them using Test Track as part of the Millenium Celebration...but I guess if it opened in 1999 then yeah...I bet they milked it.

they would tie in Test track with a lot of local commercials... push go to epcot.. lol

Test Track was the newest thing at the time anyway... so it was a helper for the push...

Me, I'd LOVE a Three Caballeros redo of El Rio. It could still provide info about Mexico, with some much-needed zip and humor, and the attraction of classic Disney characters!

I'd love anything to make that ride less like IASW. That's one of the worst disney rides anywhere.

Guests think that little shopping area is Africa already! So Disney doesn't do more to change that...

Interesting list T! Thanks for sharing that. Now we should make a list of what is still there. (Please forgive my attempts. Feel free to correct me because I know you will!)

                            What STILL is:

-Space Ship Earth updates (Sponsored attraction)

                            -Innoventions pre-show.

                            -Journey into Imagination with Figment.

                            -MouseGear.

                            -Innoventions plaza.

                            -Newer Illuminations. (Now with Sponsorship)

                            -Test Track

-Mission:Space - now with two versions

                            -Millenium Wand.

I hope SSE will get some updates. I'll ride it regardless, but still.
