  • Walt Disney World Grand Opening 1971 - THERE'S MORE!

Note a few things. Magic Kingdom is not fully completed. Adventureland sign not full up and themed, etc.

These are all from the Grand Opening Special which I believe was televised by NBC.

    Groovy, Man, Groovy, it's 1971!

And I was standing right there!

I know they're not good for the birdies and the fishies...but I miss all the balloon releases the company used to do.

I never knew WDW's teacups were originally uncovered like DL's!

And wow... Tomorrowland with practically nothing in it! Looks weird!

Yeah...I seem to recall Tomorrowland only had Flight To The Moon, Indy Speedway, the Skyway, and America The Beautiful on Opening Day.

But you may notice that in one of the song and dance numbers, that Tomorrowland is blocked off. This is because much of the television special was pre-recorded in the weeks leading up to the Grand Opening. A whole lot of stuff that's missing or did have barriers up in that special, did make it for Opening Day. You just can't believe how often things come together at the last minute at Disney.

Here's some Super 8 Sound Film home movies (personal camcorders had yet to be invented) that I personally shot in May of 1974, of the construction of the main elements of Tomorrowland that didn't open until 1975.

You know...I should also point out that in addition to much of that special being filmed in the weeks leading to its opening, many parts were also filmed after Opening Day.

They opened to the public on October 1...but they wanted to avoid the kind of bad press Disneyland got when things didn't go as expected on its Opening Day. So they didn't have any of the big Grand Opening festivities and major Press junkets until much later in the month. I think Roy officially dedicated the place on October 25th. And many of the big parties and staged press event extravaganzas and such that you see in the special, took place at the end of the month and were edited into that TV special right before it aired on (according to IMDB) October 29th.

I don't think a lot of people realize there were several weeks between Walt Disney World's "Opening Day" and its "Grand Opening" extravaganzas and celebrations. The October 1st Opening Day at Walt Disney World, was rather a whisper. I think attendance was around only 10,000.

That TV special sort of gives the impression that was all happening on October 1st, and that all the world showed up!

Disney sure knew how to fabricate and sell the magic back then!

When did they show this on the Disney Channel? I'm sorry I missed it. I love those shows, but talk about Julie Andrews overload.

She was pretty much the host, and got top billing.

The small world kids costumes are very interesting in the World of Love skit. Also I don't think I have ever seen a Dumbo walk around character
