  • Things To Do Besides The Parks

I'm going to WDW this July and I've been twice before. The last time I went was 2 years ago, so I will hit the new attractions in the parks. I was wondering if you guys have any suggestions for things to do besides the parks. I'm not looking to water ski or anything, but I know that some hotels have tours, so I'll do that. Anything else would be greatly appreciated!

Well if you don't want to leave the property, you have the entire Downtown Disney area, which has shops and restaurants, Cirque De Soleil, DisneyQuest, a movie theater, and Pleasure Island which has night clubs and comedy clubs and the Adventurer's Club. There is also the Boardwalk, which always has some kind of entertainment going on. There are also two mini golf courses and a handful of standard gold courses.

Now if you don't want to stay on property, you of course got the Universal Resort, SeaWorld, Busch Gardens, Kennedy Space Center, not to mention a million other touristy things like miniature golf and go karts.

And that's only the tip of the iceberg.

Definitely check out Downtown Disney. I like to drive around to visit the Disney resorts at times. Remember, you also have Universal Orlando nearby. There's also Downtown Orlando to check out.

I'm sure the sun is brutal in July (it is the sunshine state!), but put on your sunblock, stock up on bottled water, and try the Fantasia Gardens and Winter/Summerland miniature golf courses at WDW. They might not be on par (ha) with some of those infamous pirates mini-golf places on the Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway (or whatever it's called), but we've always enjoyed them.

If anything, it's a break from the madness of the parks, and the madness of Downtown Disney. Of course, if you're staying at the AKL, there's no need to go anywhere else.

There's good shopping in Orlando... Florida Mall, Mall at Millennia plus some halfway decent outlet malls. There's also the somewhat kitstchy stuff on International Drive (Wonderworks, a Titanic thing, etc) and Dolly Parton's Dixie Stampede dinner show is right by Downtown Disney (next to one of the aforementioned outlet malls).

You could drive east for about an hour and go to the beach.

That's a long drive, but just outside Clearwater is my favorite beach in Florida: Caladesi Island. It's a good two hours from WDW, and you need to take a short ferry ride to get on the island, but once there, you get a really nice beach with showers and rentable umbrellas and chair, a short walk from the ferry dock (which has a little snack shack and shop), and there's something like 40 people on the entire island.

OP, what resort are you staying at? Many of the deluxe and dvc resorts offer tons of activities. Also, I don't know how interested you are in history and behind-the-scenes things, but WDW has tons of different tours to take.

You could go to a dinner show, such as Medieval Times or Arabian Nights. Whenever I'm in Orlando, we usually do most family dinners offsite since we drive to Florida.

Fort Wilderness has a campfire and movie in the evening and games during the day.

Well POR has a water ferry that goes directy to DtD. There is also another ferry that goes to Saratoga Springs and Old Key West. There are many things you can do such as renting boats, riding bicycles, etc.
