  • Walt Disney World: From The Inside Out

USA Today has an article featuring a discussion with author David Koenig about his new book called "Realityland: True-Life Adventures at Walt Disney World". Here are some excerpts:

Q: With a day ticket up to $71, it seems Disney is all about making money these days. Always the case?Q: You note in the book that Disney World today is far from what Walt envisioned. How?
A: Walt's entire motivation for founding Disney World was to create a utopian city, an "Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow," covered by a climate-controlled dome, where people lived in idyllic homes, traveled by monorail and worked in high-tech labs. He built the Magic Kingdom as bait to get the public's attention.
Q: But Walt died before Disney World even opened. Why was his dream abandoned?
A: Walt's successors were well intentioned but could never figure out how to create a city of the future without bankrupting the company.
Q: Time to dish a bit. Is Disney World a good neighbor?
A: Not really. Since (it) operates its own on-property government, it reflexively looks first for what's best for the company. That means fighting against requests to help fund roads, schools and other impacts just outside its boundaries. (It contributes) to community programs and charities only when it can leverage maximum PR.

What are they going to go after him for? Telling the truth?

Actually David Koenig has been writing about the inside workings of Disney for quite some time. His other books include:

=> Mouse Under Glass: Secrets of Disney Animation & Theme Parks

Whereas most Disney authors salivate all over themselves attempting to convey the pure genius of Walt's legacy, Koenig discusses each film's flaws, often-convoluted origins, behind-the-scenes battles, and just plain bad habits with a much more dry sensibility. Yes, Disney makes magic, but they also make movies, and the book analyzes each film on its cinematic and storytelling merits.
=> Mouse Tales: A Behind-The-Ears Look at Disneyland

Koenig's tale may surprise some, since many of its specifics are so at odds with the Magic Kingdom's ultrahygienic image. If you've heard about Euro-Disney's problems (management control of staff lingerie, etc.), you expect to hear the travails of Disneyland employees, and Koenig does not disappoint, offering detailed explorations of visitor complaint procedures in which employees are presumed guilty and given no opportunity to defend themselves; the rigors of wearing hot, heavy, bulky character costumes; etc.
=> More Mouse Tales: A Closer Peek Backstage at Disneyland

Here is the human face of Disneyland. Disney magic is created by people: we humans have our vices. These people are quite capable of creating imperfect magic--that includes cast members, the crew behind the scenes, management, Disney executives, the Anaheim Police Department, other government officials, and don't forget over twelve million guests annually!

this guy makes his money bashing disney. now things aren't perfect at WDW but they aren't as bad as he makes them out to be either. and he doesn't have his facts correct either. Walt had the MK planned and ready to go. Epcot was supposed to be the utopian city and those plans were scrapped but the hotels and theme park were already planned and announced before he died.

I got my pre-ordered copy, and so far so good!

Cmash, where does Koenig have his facts wrong? I haven't heard him say/haven't seen him write that Walt had never planned a Disneyland-style park.
