  • Will Disney ever consider bringing back the Canoes and Skyway?

I was wondering if Walt Disney World would ever consider bringing back the Canoes on the rivers of america and the skyway from Fantasyland to Tomorrowland. Both were fun rides that helped balance crowds and add capacity and kinetism to the park. I was thinking of starting a letter writing campaign or something for them to consider this small fan request.

I mean Epcot Center did bring down that ugly wand, Disneyland revived the Submarine Voyage (sort of), and Haunted Mansion in Florida has been restored to its former glory...Disney is on a roll and I think these 2 (re)additions would be relatively inexpensive and do wonders for the park. They could even be marketed as "The Skyway is back!" or "The Canoes are back!" to generate more interest like tehy did when Space Mountain and the Subs came back at Disneyland.

I doubt the skyway will return if only due to the liability, if memory serves correct there have been a few idiots who tried to take the "fastpass" exit while in the middle of the ride... I believe I remember hearing about a case of a CM being killed at one of the parks as well.

The cost to redesign to make it "idiot proof" (or should I say "Idiot resistant" to prevent the invention of a bigger idiot... ) was too much when they removed it in the beginning, costs only go up with time so I'm not sure we will see it anytime soon until the current management attitude towards the parks changes.

I'm not sure about the Canoes, I know they still have them in Disneyland but I wonder if there would be an issue re-starting them legally as canoes are not what I would call "ADA friendly" vehicles. I'm sure the legal liability team is all over it for safety issues and the occasional group of idiots who all row on one side to try to tip them over... Even though its only 5 feet of water there have been drownings in rivers of America before. (yes it was after hours, they where not in the canoes etc. but they are still dead) So I kinda doubt it.

Sorry I guess thats a no on both...

The "Skyway" was high maintenance and posed too many challenges. Among other things, as mentioned above there were the 'chicken exit' problems with folks attempting to leave way too early and there were also problems with some wanna be target shooters who took delight in pelting the folks below with various and sundry projectiles.
The RoA at WDW is a bit too small for canoes and logistically there would be too much of a risk. That was a period attraction that went the way of the "Mike Fink Keelboats" and there are no plans to reintroduce it at the MK. Fort Wilderness perhaps ?!

the canoes would be do-able... and a good idea if they ever decide Fronteirland is important. The ADA has nothing to do with it.

Skyway - no, its done and gone. Ask for something better, not something old and dated.

The only way I would do a skyway would be to have enclosed carts, but of course they would have to be climate controlled, too hot in FL summer! And of course it would be costly!!

Skyway is dead and we'll have to learn to accept that.

Canoes... why was it removed in the first place? Anyone know?

Web says the stopped in 1994 - that was about the height of the 'PC Correctivness' stage of Disney.. so the lawyers probably convinced them they were too much of a liability. They probably painted some worse case scenario where a guest falls out and gets managed by the riverboat.

              Just a guess...

on that note... we did used to take canoe trips for campfire adventures in the Fort Wilderness areas back in the 80s. Wonder if they still do that...
