Because the Magic Kingdom was established in 1971.

The Magic Kingdom was established in 1971, but the time period Main Street, U.S.A depicts is circa 1901.

Walt Disney used to refer to such a thing as a "contradiction" because it undermines the believability and convincingness of the fiction.

Walt Disney Imagineering and Theme Park Operations used to understand these very basic concepts.

Today, amateurs seem to be making many of these decisions.

Moreover, the custom of turn-of-the-19th-Century railroad stations was to display the population size and the elevation on the main sign identifying each stop. So, these things were also lost.

Disneyland's custom from 1955 onward has been to consider each guest an honorary citizen of The Magic Kingdom and to tally her or him in the population size.
