  • Resort hopping.... what do you like to do?

On another thread there is a chat about the unique dining experience Afternoon Tea at the Grand Floridian.

This got me thinking about other great things that you can do at the Disney resorts even if you aren't staying at that resort.

Of course there are great Monorail and boat rides (I love to hop on the boat at Downtown Disney and check out Port Orleans.)

Then there's a free torch lighting ceremony at the Polynesian (it's like seeing a 5 minute version of the Spirit of Aloha show... but it's free.)

There's cane pole fishing at Port Orleans (for $4 I believe) and they also have horse drawn carriage rides (not sure what that costs.)

Fort Wilderness also has horse drawn carriage rides and they also have a free petting zoo.

At night Fort Wilderness does a sing a long with Chip and Dale as well as a campfire and outdoor movie (for free!)

For free you can also take a walk on the boardwalk (by Boardwalk Inn) or the beach (over at Grand Floridian, Poly or Contemporary) or you can stand there at night and watch the Electric Water Pageant (if you have never seen that make sure and catch it on your next trip!)

Of course Animal Kingdom Lodge has the amazing feature of: GIRAFFES, and if you are there after dinner time you can check the animals out using night vision goggles.

Over at Wilderness Lodge there is a geyser that shoots water up to amazing heights.

And the All Stars have really cool giant statues (and All Star Movies has a replica Herbie the Love Bug!)

What cool things have you done at a Disney resort (for free OR for a fee)?

It can be a restaurant, a quiet place to walk or a loud band...

At Christmas time at the Grand Floridian we tried roasted chestnuts for free.

And I discovered that I do not like roasted chestnuts.

Pop Century also has a dance party at the pool, I believe just on weekends though. Right after the dance party they play a movie on the big screen so you can float and watch a Disney flick at the same time.

At the risk of stating the obvious, there is always something going on at the Boardwalk

I did NOT know this!!!!! Ugh! That sounds like SOOO much fun!!!!

All of those things you mentioned Sweetie sound like fun. I keep meaning to take a day to check out resorts while we are in WDW...but, we usually end up spending it in a park. We HAVE to take a time out for resorts the next time we're there!

Re: Resort hopping.... what do you like to do?

I have spent many a lazy afternoon or evening in the lobby of the Grand Floridian, listening to the Piano player, or to the band that plays.

If you have never seen the "street" performers at the BoardWalk resort it is a must! There is a Cowgirl who does rope tricks, a guy who has a piano on a tricycle, and they are just great fun to watch and enjoy!

Spending a quiet evening walking the wooded paths at the Wilderness Lodge is always great! I love seeing the blinking lights across bay lake, and seeing the boats go back and forth.

Sometimes before I go see Hoop Dee Doo, I go extra early, so I can lie on a hammock on the white sand beach as the sun sets. You hear people going to and from the docks, talking about their day, and their experiences. The hammocks are big enough for 2 people, so sometimes it can be a great oppertunity to just talk, and stare at the sky as the stars appear.

I have also heard people talk about going to shop at the Gaylord Palms hotel and see the amazing atrium. Has anyone done this?

Why would you want to leave Disney property?

It is pretty incredible, but I don't think it's worth leaving Disney to do.

I didn't think the Disney people allowed you leave the property...

....well at least with cash and credit cards.

They do the same thing over at the All-Star resorts as well with the big movie by the main pool every Friday night and other activities like bingo and dance contests as well.
