  • JHM: SBE and Harry Potter?

    Jim Hill's update today:

    http://www.jimhillmedia.com/article.php?id=1787

    <begin quote>

Yes. After several years of protracted negotiations with author J. K. Rowling as well as Warner Bros. (During which the Walt Disney Company had to pay out an estimated $140 million in order to land the network broadcasting rights for both "Sorcerer's Stone" and "Chamber of Secrets"), it appears that the Mouse is just inches away from finally acquiring the rights to use the characters and settings from all seven of the "Harry Potter" books in a theme park setting.

And -- provided that Mickey can actually close that deal -- Well ... Picture a Disney-built site-based entertainment where -- by touching a portkey -- you're then magically whisked to Hogwarts. Which (not-so-co-incidentally) is holding an open house for muggles on that very same day.

Picture then being taken on an escorted tour of the school. Where you really do have to mind your step on the moving staircases. Where you'd better know the password or you won't be able to get past the fat lady. Where you can dine in the great hall or sit in on a potions class with Professor Snape.

    <end>

So... sounds like a Harry Potter version of "Star Trek Experience" at the Las Vegas Hilton.

Will Diznoids embrace this form of interactive experience? I don't know. As much as I enjoy eating at Quark's at STE, I don't know if I'm up to dining in the Great Hall at Hogwart's. Some forms of "interactive entertainment" work, and some don't. I guess it depends on how truly interactive it is, and how large the groups are, being shuffled from one room to another.

Seeing as how Disney is not repulsed by the notion of herding large groups of guests through their parks like a cattle drive through Montana... this might not be the best avenue for their future entertainment offerings.

I think if Disney wants to do this, they should build its own park either in north England, or in Scotland.

Unusually and exceedingly peculiar and altogether quite impossible to describe...

Is this something that's been reported from anyone other than the crap-stirring Jim Hill? I'll believe those "Harry Potter is Gay!" people before I believe anything Jim Hill, and only Jim Hill, "reports".

Another example of him just making stuff up off the top of his head. Lordy.

        From IMDB:

The Walt Disney Co. is considering constructing a "site-based entertainment" complex in Singapore that would occupy a full city block and rise six to seven stories, with each story featuring one of the Harry Potter books, Disney watcher Jim Hill reported on his blog Monday. Hill quoted an anonymous source as saying that Disney has been in protracted negotiations with Potter author J.K. Rowling and Warner Bros. to secure theme-park rights for the Singapore complex. Hill's source continued: "If this Harry Potter acquisition deal does fall apart, I'm told that the Imagineers have another SBE [site-based entertainment] concept that also might fly. One where each floor of this city-block-sized building would then celebrate a different Pixar film."

This really disgusts me. And I though the IMDB was a little more discretionary than to post JHM drivel. http://studiobrf.newshare.com/ is where the news for IMDB comes from -- perhaps Mr. Lew Irwin who edits it needs to know the quality of this particular source.

Again, has this been reported ANYWHERE but JHM?

Re: JHM: SBE and Harry Potter?

I remember hearing this rumor sometime ago from another source outside of Jim Hill - I believe it may have been on the Motley Fool Website... It was slotted as an unknown future attraction to be built after the movies where finished...

However, I sincerly questioned the reliablity of this rumor, as there is a contract between Time-Warner and Six Flags that is still in effect...

I think such is a pie in the sky hope by some younger fans to mix the popularity of Disney theme parks with Potter... When you would be more likely to see a Potter attraction at Six Flags...

I still think that Disney is more likely to close one of the less popular dark rides in fantasyland and build a new Narnia dark ride... Much to the shegren of many of us...

this is just an aside, but is it just me or do most of Jim Hill's unnamed sources all start out their quotes with the phrase, "The thing is, Jim,..."

Why would Disney pay all that money and stick it in Singapore???

I would believe it more if it was mentioning this for WDW, DLR or TDL.

you wanna know why I don't trust Jim Hill. Take a gander at this:
Yep. Let me share one last piece of e-mail with you folks:
                Jim,
I would appreciate it if you kept this anonymous. But I have a friend who works for the Warner Brother legal department, who actually sees the contracts. And they just sent me the following e-mail:
"You didn't hear it from me. But there may be a certain wizard visiting the mouse kingdom in the future."
Yes. After several years of protracted negotiations with author J. K. Rowling as well as Warner Bros. it appears that the Mouse is just inches away from finally acquiring the rights to use the characters and settings from all seven of the "Harry Potter" books in a theme park setting.

So, he get's an annomous e-mail from someone whose cousin saw a contract and though "you didn't hear it from me" mentions something like that.. THEN He makes that conclusion. Sorry Jim, not buying it. I used to be all over the Jimhillmedia boards, but that kind of speculation... as well as other shifty sources he claims to have... put it to an end.

LMAO... a guy heard from a guy who may or may not have seen a contract... Unverified by anyone, unchecked and for all we know a completely fabricated e-mail.

Running out of news to report? Just make some up! Perhaps Jim has been taking classes from Bill O'Reilly.

They MAY BE having him IN THE FUTURE does not equal "inches away" to me.
                    Good morning, son
                    In twenty years from now
Maybe we'll both sit down and have a few beers
And I can tell you 'bout today
And how I picked you up and everything changed
                    It was pain
                    Sunny days and rain
I knew you'd feel the same things...
