  • Photo Tour: The Huntington Library, Gardens, Gallery

Over the past few months, I've made as many trips to The Huntington as I have to Disneyland. It's one of my favorite places to visit in the entire L.A. area, so much so that I've been an AP holder for the past several years. The Huntington is officially located in San Marino, CA, although a lot of folks say it's in Pasadena, and is well-known for its gardens, art collection and library. It's been a pretty momentous year for The Huntington. They celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Rose Garden. The new Chinese Garden officially opened. And the Art Gallery re-opened after a major two-year renovation. The Huntington is a great place to relax, enjoy the scenery. And yes, take photos.

After parking the car on a recent trip, I made special note of my parking location.

This has now become my favorite location to park. Only a Disney geek like me would feel warm and fuzzy from seeing this. However, at The Huntington, no tram is needed to get to the main entrance.

    Approaching the main entrance

The Rose Garden was established by Henry and Arabella Huntington in 1908. The garden was looking spectacular earlier this spring and there was an accompanying exhibit: La Rose Imperiale.

Um, that's a lot of roses. The ever popular Tea Room is in the background.

A large group of red hat wearing ladies on their way to the Tea Room one Sunday.

    Getting ready to bloom

The Boone Gallery housed the temporary exhibit, La Rose Imperiale, which showcased over 100 rare illustrated herbals and rose books.

There were also rose scent stations

And bowls of dried rose petals

Outside of the Boone Gallery, I came across these two creatures.

And then it was off to see the new Chinese Garden, Liu Fang Yuan (Garden of Flowing Fragrance). At the east entrance to the garden, sat this Stone Tiger. Could Dr. Jones be nearby?

This is the garden's main entrance

As you step through the doorway, you come upon this inscription above you: Another World Lies Beyond.

The Jade Ribbon Bridge is one of the garden's many highlights

Water is a major feature in traditional Chinese gardens; this is the Jade Ribbon Bridge as seen from the other side of the small lake

Visitors take a break inside the Pavilion of the Three Friends

A small footbridge over the Flower Washing Brook

The impressive tea house (and yes, Chinese tea and refreshments are available)

I really love the addition of the Chinese Garden to The Huntington. It's beautiful and it's not yet finished. There were some roped off areas on the east end of the garden where additional plantings and landscaping was going on.

That's it for part 1. I'll be back tomorrow with photos from some of the other gardens (Desert Garden, Shakespeare Garden, Japanese Garden) and then pictures from the renovated Art Gallery.

Nice pictures! I used to live in San Marino, right off of Huntington Dr. on Ridgeway Rd.

Did you get pictures of the Children's Garden by any chance?

Thanks so much! I love this place, but sadly, haven't been in a few years. I'm very anxious to visit the new Chinese Garden! A couple of years ago, I visited one in Portland, OR and have always wanted to go back. Now, I won't have to go so far!

Beautiful pictures Armadillo4! I've always wanted to go there (went once in high school, but the gardens were closed), and now after seeing your pictures, I want to go even more!

                          Good morning, son
                          In twenty years from now
Maybe we'll both sit down and have a few beers
And I can tell you 'bout today
And how I picked you up and everything changed
                          It was pain
                          Sunny days and rain
I knew you'd feel the same things...

Hi DisneyIPresume! I did get a few pictures of the Children's Garden, but not as much as I should have. It really is a pretty cool garden to explore. Maybe I'll go back and take some more photos. If you twist my arm. Okay, you're persuasive. I'll go.

Aww, thanks Mac Daddy! You're way too kind. I hope we'll get a Mac Daddy photo thread on MC soon. I'm going through withdrawals. LOL!

I know what you three are saying. There were actually a couple years where I didn't go to the Huntington despite being a member. I think I've made up for lost time just this year alone. LOL! I definitely recommend planning a visit, you won't regret it. And when I finish up with my photos, I'll post some tips about visiting The Huntington.
