  • Tam O'Shanter Inn

While visiting LA this last week, I did have the pleasure of visiting the Tam O'Shanter Inn which was purportedly Walt Disney's favorite spot. The Tam O'Shanter is one of the oldest (if not the oldest) restaurant going back to old Hollywood (1922). Kitschy decor and some nice historical pieces in the waiting area, including the old Disney Studio connections. Some signage is also displayed which was done by appreciative Disney staff on the 75th anniversary of the Inn.

According to history, Walt and just about everyone else at the old studio lunched here every day.

It was also packed with touristas, like me!

It's actually still a good place to eat. Usually old digs like this tend to let the food quality go, but not the Tam. I get to eat lunch there on occassion (but not for a while - damn; now I have a craving).
I need to get a life...

I'm dying to eat there, never have. Not because of Walt but because I LOVE old style restaurants like that. If its a place thats been around since the 40's, has red vinyl booths and dark wood paneling, I am in heaven!

I love any place that has historical value. This seems to fit the bill.

It'd definitely make a great meet. Dinner is pricey (about $30), but the pub area is wonderful and very affordable.

One of the managers is really awesome, and he'll even give us a tour and tell us some of the stories about Walt and the studios.

            I love the Tam!

Be sure to order your chocolate souffle as soon as you sit down. They're made to order and take about 30 minutes. So if you wait until after your meal, it'll be too late.

OK, MiceChatters. Now we need to set a date and time. Let's have lunch with Walt!

Oooooo! The Tam O Shanter Inn.

Wait I have this memorized. :ap:

"For the appitizer I would like the fried mushroom's, and a Glenfiddich 20 year old on the rocks. I would also like to order the Prince Charlie Cut with creamed spinach on the side, and an order of the chocalate Souffle for dessert please......I also have my Lawry's V.I.P. card."

Alot of good memories of the Tam. It was the last place I saw Marc Davis before he passed, and the drawings of Mickey Mouse in the Bar area are drawn by John Hench for the Tam.

If you see the manager of the Tam O Shanter he'd be glad to tell you a bit of the history of the Tam and how it was labeled for a time as the Disney comissary. It's really close to the old Hyperion studio location.

Plus they have a really good selection of Scotch. :yea:

If you guys have a dinner there let me know. But you might want to preplan the dinner, espeacilly if it's larger than 10 people. You'll have to contact thier large party orginazer. Reservations are a must.

                          Re: Tam O'Shanter Inn

OK...here's the deal. Let's see if we can settle a time and date. Once that's done, I'll assemble a list of those who want to go. I'll contact the Tam O' Shanter and find what they can provide for us and make the arrangements.

                          Weekday or Weekend?
                          Lunch, Brunch or Dinner?
                          How many in your party?

Let's start with these. Should I put together a poll? (or maybe just pick a date out of the hat and tell everyone...OK...here's the date!)

                            Re: Tam O'Shanter Inn

I think a Saturday lunch would be fun. It's bound to be cheaper than dinner and maybe less crowded than dinnertime. Weekends are probably always easier for most.

I suggest maybe in late September/October since the first half of September seems to be filled up for the most part with Micechat happenings.

I would have to go with dinner.

Lunch doesn't offer the chocolate souffle.

As far as the date, late September/October sounds fine.
