  • Pirates of Carlsbad 2008

Halloween is my favorite holiday to get ready for. It's a lot of work for what amounts to a 5-hour display. But it is a lot of fun to put on. I hope these pics are welcome right along with the other pics from model builders and wanna-be imagineers...

(Obviously these are 'Under Construction' photos.)

              Re: Pirates of Carlsbad 2008

I wanted to create several 'blinds' to hide the lighting fixtures and effects for my display. I built this crate to hide a projector that creates a water effect. I stenciled 'GUN POWDER' on it to make it more natural with my pirate theme. I thought it would be a good gag to have this crate of gun powder on fire, so I cut some holes in it, scored it with a torch and put a flame effect inside. I added a mini fog machine inside. I have a control computer that, using a motion sensor to tell when people are approaching the crate, blasts a burst of smoke out the holes cut in the side as they pass. I think it is a pretty cool gag for what was meant to be a throw away piece used to hide light fixtures. Hmmm. Would that be called 'Plussing?'

It will be dressed up much better on Halloween...

                    Re: Pirates of Carlsbad 2008

Well, another Halloween is in the books. While medical distractions this week took me away from completing all my grand plans, I did manage to pull off The Pirate Swamp of Carlsbad for over 150 Trick-or-Treaters.

                    The approach:

This is a timed exposure, so imagine this darker. You can see my 'Shipwrecked Pirate' to the right and in the middle is my 'Skewered Pirate' shown in a previous post. Also you can see my 'Gun Powder Box on Fire,' also talked about previously.

                    Shipwrecked Pirate

This guy is an upgrade from last year - in a sense. He has a much better costume, and he is 'actually' turning the steering wheel (that is why the wheel is blurred in this pic). There are other storm effects like thunder, lightning, wind, etc.

                    Skewered Pirate

Same guy as posted before, but a less flattering picture. I'm need to work on this piece for next year.

                    Quicksand!

Just before you enter the Pirate Swamp, you see what has happend to a couple of unlucky buccaners before you.

Entrance to the Pirate Swamp. (No commentary. I just think it looks cool.)

One piece I missed using this year was my talking skull. I made this nice new mount for him, and the friggin' software I wrote last year would not work. I figured out the problem, but not until very late and did not have time to make him work. Next year...

These last two shots are of where the Trick-or-Treaters get their reward. In the first picture you can see the treasure chest in the lower left: it is full of full-sized candy bars. There are other Pirate props spread along the bar (pronounced: 'baaahhrrrr'). The parrot talks to the kids. He says he likes their costume, or to watch out for quicksand. Sometimes he says, "Yo! Ho! Ho! And a Snickers bar!"

To all you House Haunters out there: I feel for you. I set this up today and took most of it down tonight. There were no 'Soft Openings.' If it did not work, I had to fix it on the fly.

I'm thinking next year I will do a dry run on Friday with friends and have it all set for Trick-or-Treat on Saturday. I'm sure I will post again for...
