He was born in my hometown, and I remember watching him on television as a kid. I am presently planning a trip to the park that he built. I am excited, and so grateful that there was indeed, a Walter Elias Disney.
I always felt special - knowing that my family and I lived in the city where Mr. Disney chose to build his magic kindgom. My paternal Grandpa was an Anaheim Police Officer in the early 1950's through the mid 1960's...and I always wondered how many times he and Walt Disney crossed each other in traffic. Maybe never - maybe several times. I always wondered how many times I had a family member outside of Disneyland when Mr. Disney was in the park himself.
On a side note - my Grandpa actually pulled over David Niven as he was speeding down Harbor Blvd to Disneyland in the 50's......have to wonder if he was on his way to meet Walt Disney or what???
My mother, aunt and maternal Grandparents moved back to Southern Califronia in Sept 1966 after a year near San Francisco. My grandparents bought a brand new house off of Ball Road/East Street in 1966 and I understand that Walt Disney's last trip to Disneyland was in October 1966. It's amazing to think that Mr. Disney was just a mile and a half/two miles away from them.
Thanks, Walt, for everything you built during your stay here on this planet.
You did such a good job that the dunderheads who succeeded you have not been able to screw it up. Lord knows they have tried.
If you plan on coming back, I advise you to wait a few years before seeing what has become of that perfectly good parking lot you built.
You'll have to forgive them for that other park, Walt, for they know not what they did.
Some of my earliest memories involve visiting the trailer park where my great grandmother lived on Harbor Blvd. circa about 1960 - close enough where you could hear the Mark Twain's whistle, and sometimes the steam locomotives...
Thanks again, Walt.
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.
