  • Do you play the lottery? - what if this happened?

I listen to WGN radio most mornings. Today, the talk was about the Lottery. Now, I do not personally play the lottery, but my husband buys tickets when the amount gets pretty large. In fact, he stopped at the gas station on Sunday morning, and picked up $5 in tickets. Has he ever won? Not to my knowlege.

Some people are in what I refer to as "Lottery Pools". You know how that goes. A group of people all chip in and buy tickets, and if they get a winner, they all share in the winnings.

Now here was the scenario put forth by the WGN guy today. A regular group of people chip in to buy Lottery tickets on a regular basis. It so happens that one week, they hit the "Big One". The problem. Somebody, I'll call them "Mickey", forgot to put in their money. One of the other people put in Mickey's share, but Mickey never paid them back before the numbers were drawn.

    So here is my question.

Is Mickey entitled to a share of the winnings?

    I say No.

    What do you say?

If "Mickey" had made a prior arrangement with the others to cover his share of the funds then yes, he is entitled to a share. If, however, the others took it upon themselves to provide "Mickey's" portion in order to meet a certain target of numbers/tickets then he is not entitled to a share since he did not contribute any money.

OMG, this EXACT thing happened to my Mom about 12 years ago. NO KIDDING!!!

She didn't pay because she only had $5 on her that day and wanted lunch. They hit the lotto and all got about $700k. She didn't get anything and still had the $5 in her pocket because she didn't have time to eat that day.

I agree with your "no," Barbara.

That is the saddest story I have heard in a long while.

I say no, that person is not entitled to the winnings.

Is Mickey and the other person that put in his share related? B/C, that can be a sticky situation.

Nope, Mickey isn't entitled to anything.
