  • Attack of the Killer Bees!

    Well, kind of.

My Saturday was not fun. There was a swarm of angry bees outside my kitchen window and they were managing to somehow get into my kitchen. The BF & I taped up every crack, crevice & hole we could find yet they kept coming. We used a ton of spray and went through nearly a whole role of duct tape. The complex office called their regular pest control and guess what? They're not open on the weekends. So they called a bee guy, but he couldn't come out until between 6-8pm because he had 2 other jobs to take care of first. The BF & I had tickets for the Toy Story 3D double feature, plus the whole thing was making me crazy, so I had to get out for awhile. The girl from the complex office came over though so I could show her everything so she could explain it all to the bee guy. She was freaked out when she saw how the bees were swarming outside. It was like something out of a horror movie.

Anyhow, we locked up the cats with food, water and a litterbox in the bedroom (plus put a towel under the door to be safe and headed out for awhile. The bee guy called me from the movies (luckily before they started) and let me know he treated the area He found a few nests and removed them and said any remaining bees should be gone within a day (but the treatment should take care of them). He said if they're still around Monday to have the complex office call him and he'll come back out to re-treat (but he doesn't think he'll have to).

What an ordeal. The really freaky part is I've never been stung so I have no idea if I'm allergic. My dad is allergic bad, but my mom isn't. Didn't see any bees flying around when we got back from the movies, so that's a good sign. Cleaned up all the dead ones on the kitchen floor, the counter top & the window sil. We're going to untape everything and give the kitchen a good cleaning tomorrow. Until then, I'm keeping the cats shut in the bedroom with me to be safe. Hope I can sleep tonight. Today was a nightmare. Going to the movies did help get my mind off it for awhile though.

    *shudder*

oh no!!!! Now, I love bees. Never been stung. And, I've been known to hold them in my bare hands. But, I can imagine how annoying and scary that would be to have them swarming in your house. Esp. with cats running around.

I hope they are gone for good.

I can't believe we never knew those nests were there. And I wonder what set them off to swarm like that. It was really bad.

Sounds like maybe something disturbed their nest and got them all worked up. I'm glad they're gone and no one was stung.

We had a wasp invasion once. They built a big next under the eaves of the house. Wasps really scare me because they're aggressive and they can keep on stinging.

Woke up this morning and no bees inside or outside. The girl from the complex office even called when they opened at noon today to check on things. She said she's going to have the bee guy come back later this week to double check on everything and make sure all the nests are totally gone. But so far we're all good.

The BF untaped everything and I gave the kitchen a good scrub down. The cats are so happy to not be shut in the bedroom anymore!

I work in the HVAC business and wasps love air conditioning units. I can't begin to tell you how many panels I've opened to find a huge wasp hive hiding underneath. I've even come across some hornet ones as well. Something must have agitated them and it sounds like they've been there for a while. I think if the bee guy got the hive, they won't be back there for a while, they get pretty lost without their nest.

i'm actually pretty calm when it comes to bees (but i've never been in a position like yours where it's a literal SWARM), and i handle myself pretty well when there's a bee flying around me or lands on me.

what gets me is when i'm pretty calm with a nearby bee, the people around me are freaking out like they're about to DIE with the simple presence of the bee and swatting it and running which puts me in a bad position because i'm just sitting there calmly with a now aggravated bee.

That's a pretty frightening story. I can see why you'd be a bit traumatized. Especially since you have pets.

I've never had an experience like that with bees, but I did get swarmed by ants one Christmas. My grandmother sent me a big can of Topsy's Popcorn from Kansas City. I set the unopened can in the living room for us to eat on Christmas morning. When I woke up, the entire living room was a moving black sea of ants. Christmas was ruined. After we had sprayed everything and killed all the ants, I opened the can and found thousands of ants (most of them still alive) inside. Somehow, they had managed to get inside the sealed can! It was totally freaky.

                      Ewwwww!!!! I can only imagine.

And yeah it was pretty scary on Saturday. Besides worrying about my cats (even though they were shut away in the bedroom), I was terrified about getting stung because I have never been stung before, so I don't know if I'm allergic or not. My dad is deathly allergic, but my mom isn't... and I don't want to find out if I am.

I am one of those freaking out people when it comes to bees. Have been since I was a wee one. I had bad experiences and memories with them though. The bee phobia comes from when I was little and got on the swing set at my grandparents. Unfortunately for me wasps had built a hive in the swingset and I was stung quite a bit. When I was working at DCA back in 2000 I woke up and found a swarm of bees had created a hive right in the overhang in front of my door and there was another hive on the side of the apartment near the patio door as well. The buzzing was so loud that even with all of the doors and windows shut it was very audible over the TV. When I called my apartment manager they wouldn't send someone out until I went above their heads. It took two days before someone came out. Thankfully I was able to crawl in and out of my bedroom window to get to work, but I'll never forget the sound or the sight of all of those bees. It was my own personal nightmare.

What? Your complex wouldn't send some out to remove the hives until you went over their heads? That's messed up. I'm glad the people who work in the office at my complex are all really nice (they also all live at the complex) and do whatever they can to help if there's a problem.

When I was a kid, a neighbor down the block was trimming his hedges when he trimmed right into a wasp's nest without realizing it. The wasps swarmed him, stinging him multiple times. He made it into his house, saw his wife, murmured something and then dropped dead on the floor. Be very wary around these little monsters...
