Got any old blankets? Animal shelters need them!

Animal Lovers,

If you have any blankets in your closet that you don't use any more and are just taking up space, why not donate them to dogs and cats in animal shelters, who could use them to stay warm this winter?

What better way to make extra room in your closet? And happy dogs and cats are more likely to be adopted and find permanent homes.

aw, I wish I would have thought about this! We just threw away a very large comforter. Phooey. Thanks for telling me about this. I will remember to save my blankets and donate them each year instead of throwing them away!

It's too bad I live in NorCal, otherwise I would. Maybe there's something like that around where I live. This is a very noble and sweet thing you are doing by the way, CaliforniaAdventurer.

Check with your local ASPCA or shelter. Since I live in Northern California too....I give my old blankets or inexpensive blankets that I can get from Wal-Mart or Target to the shelter down the street from me. I take them to the same shelter I adopted Olivia from and they are always very appreciative. I try to donate 5 a month and they say that the blankets are appreciated all year round.

I will gladly donate anything that I can to Animal Shelters, I hate seeing strays and abused animals, and I really hate watching that commercial with sarah mclauglin or whatever her name is with those sad animals, I want to help but wonder how much of the money actually goes to the animals, any suggestions?

I'm really not sure how much goes to the animals, but if you donate directly to the shelter, I'm sure it goes towards the upkeep too. I use to volunteer at the animal shelter over the summers while I was in high school and the items people donate (blankets, comforters, ect) go directly into the kennels.

Its funny I was just thinking about paula Abdul from another Idol thread and just to see what that honey was up to I see that she sells her old clothes on ebay and the money goes to a association called American Humane, I just registered and checking them out now, it looks legit they email you when they need volunteer help and great updates, I am going to give them a chance and donate what I can which right now is mostly volunteer work but every little bit helps.

I used to trust The Goodwills I donated anything I didint need and volunteered at multiple locations until I got an inside look personally on what happens there, lets just say corruption. Employees get most of the items.

Paula Abdul also works in part with Natural Balance dog food, to help raise awareness for seeing eye dog groups. She was at the graduation of my dog.

PS...I think it's extremely sweet that you donate blankets to the shelter.


I was a little taken aback by our's. A few months ago, I found a half blind stray cat hanging around our house. I fed her everyday, but worried about her getting hurt because of her inability to see. I called the local shelters, hoping to turn her into them...and none of them would take her because I live on the Air Force base. I was really shocked, because, in all my years of living on different bases, I have never run out of stray cats to feed. It seems, people get orders and move...leaving their pets behind to fend for themselves. I figured the shelters would realize this, (cause it seems to be a blatant fact to everyone I talk to) and offer to take them in if people could capture them.

My next door neighbor, said she found that telling them she found the animal on the side of the road, while just happening to have a carrier...works wonders. Just can't mention the base.

In any case, I plan on starting a monthly donation to the ASPCA. That's part of my New Year's resolution.
