  • Classmates.com Beware!

If you have a profile on Classmates.com and have your account set to manual renewal double check it. I signed up in December of 08 and set my account for manual renewal. I do this all the time since I never know if I will have the money to pay for the subscription. Well I got my credit card statement yesterday and there was a charge from them for $39. I haven't logged in to my account since the summer and I doubled checked it then to make sure it was still set to manual and it was.

I called them yesterday to find out why they charged me and was told it was set to auto renewal but was changed yesterday to manual. How convienent it's now manual after you get your money. The woman I talked to said there was nothing they could do and basically I was out of luck. I went searching on the internet to see if there were any other complaints about them and I found 16 pages of posts on the Consumer Affairs web site about this happening, a lot this month alone. Even people that removed their credit card removed from the site were charged.

I called them again today and got the charge reversed after being on the phone with them for 45 minutes. They kept wanting to give me only half the amount but told them the only way to make me happy was to refund the full amount. I told them I would send a complaint to the BBB if they wouldn't help. I just had to keep pressuring them and they finally caved in. I also made them send me an email saying the would never charge me again and that I have been removed from their system. I printed out the pages of my account showing that they don't have my credit card number listed also, just incase.

So if you have an account with them and have it set at manual renweal, double check your credit card or bank statement to make sure you didn't get charged. Let your friends and family know about this also. By the info on the internet it seems like this is a problem.

I can't stand auto-renewal features like that. As a comparison, XBox Live does auto-renewal, and they force you to phone them to turn if off. There's no reason not to let their customers do it via the web site, other than to hope that the inconvenice/lack of awareness causes people to renew without knowing it.

On a side note, is something like Classmates.com not obsolete, as you can search for classmates through a site like Facebook for free?

That's one reason I didn't set it to auto renew with classmates since I've found more on Facebook.

Good for you for not giving up until you got your money back!

We had to do almost the same exact thing (stay on the phone FOREVER) for us to get our money back for our airplane charges. We were planning on giong to WDW but cancelled when my mom got cancer and my step-dad lost his job (around the same few days of her diagnosis)

I'm glad to hear that you won, just like us. I swear we had to send medical documents to prove that our mother was ill before they forked over the cash.

I think I had a free subscription to them, but it's been years since I've visited. I couldn't even tell you my login info there anymore.

Hmm, I thought I read you couldn't turn off auto-renewal online. Thanks for the info.
