I could care less. Salmon's not my favorite fish but it doesn't matter to me where it was caught.

Is it really pink? Rethink. After being fed a diet of corn, the farm raised salmon are injected with food coloring to give it the nice hue of a fish that swam in the ocean and exercised its muscles.

To get a few more answers for you, I consulted Jane Houlihan, senior vice president for research of the Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit organization that has examined this subject in detail. She told me the following:

"Nearly all salmon Americans eat are farm-raised -- grown in dense-packed pens near ocean shores, fed fish meal that can be polluted with toxic PCB chemicals, awash in excrement flushed out to sea and infused with antibiotics to combat unsanitary conditions. Some salmon are raised on farms that use more sustainable methods, but you can't tell from the packaging.

Eating farmed salmon occasionally is not a great health concern, but risks can add up if you eat salmon often. But the long-term environmental damage caused by the industry is substantial. We recommend wild salmon over farmed whenever possible."

Here's another question: What about free range organic eggs, vs. chickens that live thier entire lives laying eggs in a 2'x2' cage? Same thinking, it doesn't matter to you?

I try to buy hormone free, organic meats whenever possible. Same with eggs and milk. The more natural and fresh, the better.

You live too far inland to have ever had fresh salmon!

Eat it the day it's caught wild off the boat, you'll have another opinion.

What kind of trout and freshwater fish are there in your area, Wrassler? Fishin's good eatin'.

I think Trout primarily. It's a shame I live right on the lake and can't think of all the fish in it!.

Honestly it doesn't. I do prefer it fresher but unless I consider the animal's treatment to be totally inhumane, I'll buy whatever.

I grew up on a ranch. Having raised our animals in what you would consider an "organic" / "natural" setting, before it was even a movement, I prefer to buy free range eggs and hormone free meat and milk products. Same with organic vegetables. I don't want toxic pesticide and fertilizer residues.

                          Fish are friends, not food.
                          Growing older is manditory
                          Growing up is however, optional

I think the bigger question is ...

WHO IS BUYING THEIR FRESH FISH AT TARGET!!!!

I realize they have "Super Target", etc ... which is fine for most items. But when it comes to Fish, it's gotta be from a Fish Market/Butcher. Even the regular butcher counter at the grocery store is iffy at times.

I like wild salmon over farm raised myself; but if you are eating fish several times a week and/or if you are pregnant you might want to consider the fact that mercury levels are higher in wild fish then they are in farm raised...fyi!
