A midwife attends childbirth, provides support during labor and delivery, and supervises the general care of women and children directly after birth. The term midwife, meaning "with a woman," was first recorded in 1300. However, accounts dating to the second century confirm the role of midwives in the birthing process. Contemporary midwives provide care to women during normal pregnancies and deliveries and call on obstetricians or other physicians if complications develop. Midwifery is a professionally regulated field.

oh wow. That was really informative. Thanx for posting that.
My youngest sister was born at home and my mom had a midwife for that, but I was to young to realize exactly what a midwife was. lol.

        I love random questions.

Doesn't look like the entire question has been answered!

So, anybody know why it's illegal in some states?

My guess is "To make you ask questions..." but I'm curious about the legalities -- I see nothing wrong with it.

            Re: a question

Some states have banned the use of licensed midwives due to powerful lobbies of medical professionals forcing women to use hospitals for giving birth. Virginia is one them.

In my family my maternal (6 children) and paternal (8 children) grandmothers both used midwives. In rural Pennsylvania at that time no one would think of going to a hospital to have a baby.
