  • Sony's new attempt at stopping piracy

    http://www.theregister.com/2005/11/01/sony_rootkit_drm/

Basically they are installing a "Rootkit" which will restrict how many digital copies can be made from the PC.

A 'root kit' generally refers to the nefarious malware used by hackers to gain control of a system. A root kit has several characteristics: it finds its way onto systems uninvited; endeavors to remain undetected; and then may either intercept system library routines and reroute them to its own routines, or replace system executables with its own, or both - all with the intention of gaining system level ownership of the computer.
What the :!$#%: is this??? I mean they want to stop piracy but this is going a bit too far IMO.

I can see this coming back to bit them ... you know where.

Wow, That just dropped sony some major cool points. I salute them with my middle finger.

If I buy the CD, I should do whatever I want to do with it. OK, so they think they have a huge problem with pirating, but this is SO not the way to go about it. Shame on you Sony.

                YAY!

I'm glad they realized they messed up (and very bad), I'm all for companies trying to find a way to protect there stuff, but this went WAY too far. Even Texas knew this and they are suing Sony BMG for it. (link)

                    ppppbbbtttt

That wouldn't have helped at all. Infact the root kit hit itself so it couldn't be uninstalled by those applications, heck, even if you uninstalled it you wouldn't have a working version of Windows.
