  • Random Question: Child seats for a rental car

Howdy folks. I hope you don't mind a completely random question from a stranger to these parts.

Short version: What's the best strategy for getting child seats for a rental car? Preferably at a low cost.

My family is going to Hawaii (Kaua'i) for Christmas. (Gotta love credit card miles.) The only children in the group belong to my brother, they are aged 3 and 6. The family will be renting two cars, my parents one and myself the other.

My brother lives in another country and does a lot of traveling. He insists that if he walks into the rental car office and is a nice person, they will give him child seats for free.

Mother and I are skeptical about this plan. She is weighing the obvious options: pay the stated rental fee or bring the spare seats that she owns. The former is more expensive but only by about $20, and bringing the seats with them is a bit of a hassle.

What say you, community of MiceChatlandia? What experience do you have with child seats while on vacation? What do you suggest we do?

    Much thanks!

checking them at the airport isn't a big hassle if they get used quickly. plus, you know exactly what you are getting with no hassle. rental seats can be flaky if they actually have any at time of pickup, etc

I used to put my daughter in her car seat on the airplane seat. Do they still do that? I am assuming that a 3 and 6 year old would have their own seats on the plane and they could just use their own.
