  • Your Thoughts About Joe Paterno and the Penn State Sickening Scandal

Indeed it is sickening, and continues to evolve into the biggest scandal in sports history.

I think Joe Paterno enabled his trusted assistant to molest young boys and he covered it up for a number of years.

I think his statue needs to come down, and perhaps some of his coaching records should be looked at.

I would like to know your thoughts.
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

Concur. Take the statue down. Not sure about the coaching records though. Kind of hard to imply that the scandal affected what happened on the field... well... except for the fact that Sandusky should have been in prison about 15 years ago.

You might as well ask the mt rushmoore be changed. The man is that big there. They will put Sandusky away, purge, and move on. Joepa will be stained but not purged

I would be for banning the team from play for a few years. That will hit the college were it really hurts. The reason they did nothing was to save them from potential revenue loss. So give Penn St. a few years off and let them loss all that money.

The sad thing that will also come out of this are the innocent football players on the team who will suffer. All they wanted to do is play football at a prestigious school. The marching band, cheer leaders, fans will suffer, all on account of an idiot who got his pleasures with his young victims. I truly hope Sandusky is put in the general populaiton.

The penalties have been handed down. What are your thoughts about the deservedly harsh NCAA sanctions, and the statue coming down?

Seemingly, a good number of high-level college staffers not only participated in covering up the molestation - they actually created an atmosphere where he would have continued access after they became aware of the situation.

The institution needs to be punished in a significant way and the sanctions reflect this. One graduating class having a "reduced" Penn State branded college experience is completely acceptable collateral damage.

                I agree Erik...

all too often I hear about 'but what about the town...' 'what about the players...' 'they players didn't do anything wrong....'

People seem to forget the NCAA doesn't just regulate the game - but the programs. Here the univ and program had fundamental issues that the NCAA is setting out to PUNISH them for. Punishment includes 'pain'. These aren't 'reforming' steps and nor are they intended to be. When the NCAA takes away scholorships due to recruiting issues - that's not 'reforming' steps, those are punishment. So is this.

The program and leadership colossally failed and it seems directly intended to keep this buried. For that, the program needs to be punished - so they and others see the downside of such behavior.

I just can't believe that they would cover for a man that was molesting boys at their beloved college!

Re: Your Thoughts About Joe Paterno and the Penn State Sickening Scandal

I couldnt believe that a man like Joe Paterno would cover up for what Sandusky was commiting. The university for years to come will be tarnished, I dont think people understand the impact this will have on everyone moving forward. Look what happened today, a MAC team, a team who usually is happy with a 5 win season went into happy valley and beat Penn State, in years past this game would have been one sided with Penn State being the dominant force, it looks like the sanctions have already begun taking their toll on the team... Im not a Penn State fan but I am VERY dissapointed that this has happened to them, its as much sad as it is sickening

Jerry Sandusky sentenced to at least 30 years on child sex abuse charges - ESPN

                      30 years minimum - 60 years maximum.

Are you KIDDING ME!!!! Granted yes, he is 68 years old and will die in prison. That's not the point. Should have been "Life", plain and simple.

I don't think a life is a sentence available for this crime. It's just about years.. and the judge said (paraphrasing) 'I could give you hundreds of years.. but this will mean you will be in prison for life'. The judge made it clear in his statements he was giving him the equivalent of life in prison.
