        I'm a pop girl myself...

My mom has a theory that those in the South say soda (doesn't matter where, either coast or mid-west) and those in the North say pop. Guess this thread will prove her right or wrong!

I find this interesting because here in WI, we say "soda" and I've found that more often than not, people in the other states I've traveled to call it "pop" or "soda pop". I thought that the "soda" thing was more localized to just Wisconsin.

Hmmmm...would people who take this poll could also indicate what region of the country they're in just to see what the general trend is? Just for curiousties sake; not to prove a theory right or wrong...

I put down "soda," but 99% of the time I'll say the full name of the drink, i.e., "Hey, grab me a Caffeine Free Diet Coke, please!". If there were only one type in the house, I'd say "Hey, grab me a soda, please!"

I grew up saying "Pop" but after asking for Pop on a trip to Philadelphia growing up and getting nothing but a blank stare back, I've called it soda ever since. Also, the website www.popvssoda.com is an old website, but it did the survey by region for those interested.

Ah, you grew up in Minnesota too. A lady at a store in Texas gave me a weird look when I asked where the "pop" was. I understand that some people call it different things. I am aware that cheese heads in Wisconsin call drinking fountains bubblers and so on.

At a restaurant I always ask for the brand name that they offer. While at home, I say soda. The kids know what I mean and bring me the right flavor.

                            We call it Soda-

Personally I prefer unsweetened Iced Tea.

When I was growing up in North Carolina, we called it "iced tea."

But when we had something fizzy, we called it by it's name.....RC, Coke, Pepsi, etc.

It took me maaaany years of living in Oregon before I could say "pop" like everyone else. Now I say pop.

In my "American Cultures" class, I was told that "pop" was a midwestern thing, "Coke" was more likely to be heard uttered in the south and "soda" was for everywhere else. Don't know about "soda pop." But it sure seems by this thread that it could be anything. Anyway, I say soda. Is my dad the only one that calls it "soft drink?"

There is a on line site that has done a survey across the US and Canada, and there is definitely a difference depending on what part of the country, what state your from.

Soft Drink should also be a choice.

Here is a link to a great map with some nationwide results:

A page that maps the geographic distribution of the terms "pop" and "soda" when used to describe carbonated beverages

Ooops, looks like anders beat me to it.
