  • Why is the English Language so hard to learn.

The bandage was wound around the wound.

The farm was used to produce produce.

The dump was so full it had to refuse more refuse.

We must polish the Polish furniture.

He could lead if he could get the lead out.

The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert.

Since there is no time like the present, he thought in was time to present the present.

When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes.

I did not object to the object.

It's all those darned rules and exceptions. Use it here, but not here. Do this always, except for this time and that time. It can be very confusing to people trying to learn the language.

I think any foreign language is hard to learn--some people pick it up faster and easier than others. And the age you are when you are taught another language makes a big difference. At my first elementary school, where I attended grades K-2, we had once a week Spanish lessons and I still remember quite a bit. I took 4 years of German in High School (my dad asked me at the time what the devil I was doing taking German when we share a border with Mexico) and I can only speak a few words and count to 12. Pretty sad.

I really do feel for the immigrants that have to learn English. It's got to be tough.

Yes, English is one of the hardest languages to learn. In my English Language History class, I learned that English is a mutt language. It is a mixture of many other languages such as Old English and has been transformed year after year adding new rules and things.

english verbs are a mess.. 'mutt' as someone put it is a good way of describing it.

Its all the inconsistencies and 'one off' type rules that make it more complex then other languages for others to learn. Plus, it doesn't 'share' as much as other languages. In Europe, many of the languages are so close, many times people who don't even speak the language can at least get the idea. Very common in scandinavia

English actually is the hardest to learn, not one of the hardest. It's because as posted above, so many single words can mean the same thing.

I doubt that its the HARDEST. Considering most of the world is taught it as a 2nd or 3rd language quite regularlly.

I would imagine japanese or chinese being quite tough given the # of years it takes to study them in University

                              I blame those wacky Brits!

I'm thankful English is my native tongue, because my experience trying to learn other languages has taught me one thing...I totally suck with languages! It almost didn't matter what language I took (including the required English), I struggled. I cannot imagine moving to a country not knowing the language and then trying to learn it like my great-grandparents had to do.
