So I fell off my bike today...

I was on my way to school and I was stopping at the corner to wait for traffic to pass. I stop, and I go to put my foot down on the ground to keep my balance but my shoe got stuck in the strap! So I fell over, on the ground, into some gravel/rocks in the street. I sc up my elbow, my knee and I had little rocks embedded in my palm! Not Fun!

My husband had a spectacular crash on his bike a few months ago. He went end over end and flipped over. I was shaking for days afterward, he cracked his helmet in half and was really banged up. Mostly, I was angry because no one stopped to help him and he was in shock and rode home that way. :bash: And Portland is Bike City USA!

It was the fault of Performance Bikes, he'd just taken it in for a tune up and they left something loose. They replaced everything from his helmet to his gloves, to his custom handlebars. A thirty-second screw up cost them about $500 to fix.

I'm so sorry you fell--it can be really scary!!

Oh ouch! I'm sorry that happened. And penguinsoda is right, this situation calls for external application of ice and internal application of chocolate (at DL whenever possible).

Chocolate would have been good! Instead, I kept riding to school, cleaned myself up in the bathroom, and bummed some advil off a friend of mine. My arm is a little sore this morning but not too bad. :blush:

Hey, at least it sounds like a little tumble..

I haven't rode consistantly since my 'big one'. Front Fork folded in half on a landing doing about 25mph.. face plant right over the handlebars into concrete.. Luckily no real damage.. only 16 stitches and scars on my nose, cheek and upper lip.

I'm glad you're ok! Flipping over my handlebars was the introduction to my bike. Totally my fault, but still kind of shook me up anyway.

I've also fallen over just like you did on my mountain bike. Put my foot down, soft sand, ankle folds over, and down I go.

Yeah.. this was going full steam.. jumping successive small groups of stairs. I was all strapped in, so that combined with the speed gave me no real options. I honestly thought at first my front wheel had come off because I landed and just kept going forward. It wasn't until I got up and saw that my bike now looked like a chopper! The front wheel was wedged into the handlebars.

The 1.5 mile walk home carrying the bike bleeding every where pretty much sucked too. Had to walk across campus not really knowing what I looked like. Luckily I had my gym towel with me so I could hold it against my cuts, but wasn't until I got home that I knew what the damage was.

I think my brother's got you beat.

He was a freshman in high school and I was in 8th grade. We lived up the street (on a hill) from our elementry school, so after school and on weekends, we'd ride our bikes up there all the time, bring basketballs and such with us and just have fun.
Well, we weer coming back and he had the basketball in one arm and wanted to change gears, so he switched the basketball into his other arm and fell. He was lucky because he wasn't wearing a helmet.
His right arm was scrapped up good, but it didn't hurt much, but my mom took him to the urgent care anyways because it didn't look right. He fractured his arm in like 3 places, had surgery to put in a metal plate and 6 screws into his elbow. Had a catapiller scar (puffy one) on one side of his arm.
A few years ago, it was bothering him, so he had alot of scar tissue build-up, so he had an outpatient surgery to clean it out (the doctor is the guy who woks on the Cincinnati Bengals and the Cincinnati Reds), and was sent to phyical therapy, aggressive one. Well, stitches broke open uring the session, so he went back to the doctor to get it checked out, just in case it was infected, he just looked at it and said it was fine, gave him a band-aid and sent him away. Turns out, he developed a staff infection, so he had to have another surgery, so he has a matching scar on the other side of his elbow.

My old friend Erin wasn't wearing a helmet when she fell, cracked her skull, had to have brain surgery to allieviate the pressure or something and she still doesn't really remember what happened.

Sounds like an "Artie Johnson"--typically happens when a cyclist is new to clipless pedals and doesn't get disconnected in time. The bike comes to a stop and the hapless rider tips over, still attached to the pedals.

Artie Johnson was a comedian on the TV show "Laugh-In." One gag he constantly repeated was falling over sideways on a tricycle after coming to a stop.

When I told a friend on mine about the incident, he told me the same story. That must have been funny to see.

Oh no, sorry to hear that! When I first started riding a lot (training for centuries) over 10 years ago, I had a couple of close calls, including one where I swerved to avoid a car and hit a curb and got thrown into a fire hydrant - ouch! But any accident you walk away from is both a learning opportunity and a reminder to be careful!

Glad your ok though TBMinnie. Been there done that many a time on my my bike.They happen even when you least expect it on any given day, time. Hope it doesnt discourage you from getting back on.
