  • Baby talk

Growing up, I was the oldest kid in the family, so I was also the trendsetter when it came to naming relatives.

For instance, I had two uncles named Wil (Wilbert). Since I was "pronunciation challenged", I was told to call one Uncle Wil. Well, it came out "Awoo". LOL. "Awoo" stuck, and up until his death, he was still referred to as Awoo by all of us kids.

My other Uncle Wil's last name was Borba. So, in an attempt to distinguish the two from each other, I called him Uncle Borb. Worked for me! And he liked it too.

    Fast forward to today...

My youngest daughter came up with the funniest ones. Occassionally, we would go to the Hometown Buffet at the mall. At times, we would also enjoy a day at the beach in Half Moon Bay. Somehow, she got the two mixed up. Now when we go to the mall, she asks to have dinner at "Half Moon Buffet"!!! LOL

One of her grandfathers lives in a pink house, so naturally, he is called, Papa with the pink house.

She also called the DL Turkey's "Strawberry and Jam". (???)

I'm gonna miss the baby talk...

    Re: Baby talk

Both of my grandpa's were Papa's because of me calling them that. It has gone on through 8 grandkids and 3 great grandkids

My oldest used to call tomatoes noi noi, he named my mom maamaw, and ketchup and mustard were red and yellow.
My youngest had his own language that he made up, with made up names for people, tv shows, characters everything  He wouldn't follow with the maamaw though he calls her sheshe, no idea why  He also used to call my brother and his (now ex) wife Duba and Suba and then my two youngest cousins were 2Duba and 2Suba  Yeah he's a weird one

My kids call my mom and dad bubby and zayda and call my brother uncle sam, but get confused when they hear me call him Sammy. They call their dads parents gramma and grampa. Now here comes the confusing part (at least for me). They have another set of grandparents (their dad remarried) and call them nana and papa. They also have great grandparents from their step mom who they also call nana and papa. IF they are talking to me about any of them, i have no idea which grandparent they are talking about.
There is also a little girl across the street that i used to babysit (shes about 12 now) and when she was real little, she couldnt say becky, so she called me vicki. who happens to be her next door neighbor. that got pretty confusing for her parents if she was talking to them about either of us.

My daughter calls me mama and grandma is mawmaw (just a slight difference). Grandpa is papa even still not sure where she came up with that. The great-grandparents are all g.g's. Watermelon is wawa. I am going to miss her baby talk!

My daughter used to call presents "burprises" (aka, surprises).

She refers to my mom and Nurse Dee Dee. We have no idea where that comes from, except that my mom is a nurse. But her name is Lora, not Dee Dee. Confusing.

She also used to refer to the feeling of anticipation and fear that you get from scary movies as "tensity".

Oh, and frecky, bubbe and zayde aren't that unusual. That's what most Jewish kids call their grandparents! That's what my daughter calls my father and his wife.

                Hotels are called Hoteyals.
                Beginning is fahginning.

My mom & step-dad are Gambear & Popi. My dad is called GrandPAW (the last part is yelled). My step-mom is simply grandma. Nathan and I each have brothers named Jason, so to differentiate the two, the kids call my brother Uncle Opie.

My cousin's kid has all kinds of wacky names for the various family members. The strangest and most random of which are for the two women she spends the most time with. Her grandmother (my aunt) is "Patches" and her great-grandmother is "Munchie". No one has any idea where these names came from, she just started using them one day and they've lasted a couple of years now.

My Great-Grandmother was always known as Grandma two.

When I was young (probably 2 or 3) my Mom was trying to explain the difference between Grandma and Great-Grandma. She kept saying this is grandma (referring to her mother) and this is grandma 'too'. I took it as Grandma #2 and started calling her Grandma Two.

Well, it caught on and by the time she passed away everybody in the family just called her Grandma Two.

What a great lady she was.

My grandpa's name is Clarence, but since he had red hair everyone called him "Red". My grandma's name was Pearl. Somewhere along the way I decided that she needed to be a color too, so she was then known as Grandma Purple!

My son is now 8. When he was little he had trouble with the concept of "time", as most small kids do. So we had "today", "today-tomorrow" which meant later today, and "tomorrow-tomorrow", which was the actual next day. If something happened in the vague past but he couldn't name when, it was "lasterday". Maybe not yesterday exactly, but the last time, whenever that happened to be! Made sense to me!

I am not sure if I gave any of my relatives nicknames, but I gave my cat his nickname, "Sese." (Pronounced "C-C")

The hardest thing I came to terms with was realizing my parents and grandparents had first names when I grew up !

Not only the first name thing, but explaining "your aunt is my sister" and "grandma is my mom". That is tricky stuff right there!

I used to baby sit for a couple of boys who used lasterday. They also came up with yesterweek. They had the funniest way of describing things. I asked them one evening what they wanted for a snack, the 4 year old said "furry buns". I'm imagining moldy bread. I asked him to show me what furry buns were and he pointed to the powdered mini donuts. Cinnamon toast was a sugar sandwich.

A little girl (about 18 months old) I used to babysit would always ask for a dadoo when she wanted a cookie. We finally figured out that this came from so many people handing her a cookie and saying to her "Say thank you."

I knew a woman who was trying to explain to her grandkids the concept of having two grandmothers. She told them that their mommy's mother was Grandma Smith and she was Grandma Campbell. The kids associated the name Campbell with the soup company so she became Grandma Soup.

My nephew, who is now 26, used to say (as if it were one word)
"fu-joo-serdel-lerdel" which in reality was "love you, see you later". My daughter would call her uncle Gary "gogeegee" and her aunt Danice "dashy". She also insisted that the word "dress" began with the letter j. I never did figure that one out.
