  • For those born between 1930 & 1979!

    We Survived!!

    TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED the 1930's 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's !!

First, we survived being born to mothers who might have smoked and/or drank lots of coffee and tea with caffeine while they were pregnant.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-based paints.

As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, booster seats, seat belts or air bags. Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle. We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank koolade made with sugar, but we weren't overweight because .
WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING !

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound , CD's or Ipods, no cell phones! , no personal computers , no Internet or chat rooms.......
WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them!

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law or got in trouble in school was unheard of. They actually sided with the law and with the teachers! Amazing, wasn't it?

These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL!

If YOU are one of them ... . CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own good

And while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave (and lucky) their parents were.

Ah, the good old days. In recent years I have felt so fortunate to have been a child in the '50s.

Thanks for posting this, it actually made me feel more fortunate.

I actually think it should be geared toward people born before 1970. I was born in the mid-70's and a lot of those things don't apply.

We had Nintendo and a computer. BB guns? Not on my mothers watch!!! Seatbelts and car seats? Absolutely. Lead based paint? Outlawed in the 70's. Hitchiking? My mom would have had a complete fit.

Interesting list, but far more appropriate for people born before 1970 IMO.

BTW, since when is bleu cheese a no-no for pregnant women? No one told me about that when I was pregnant.

At 514 years old, one would hope you could spell COLUMBUS correctly.

I was born in the '73 and we never used seatbelts when I was younger. - I am still here. I did not have Nintendo until a teenager. It was Atari when we were younger and I did not have that either. Personal computers- not in every household than either- not until I was a teenager. Pre-teen - don't think I was ever in the house- always outside, always playing.

I was born in 1981 and I was always outside as a kid. We had a nintendo but it was more a rainy day activity.

I used to share sodas until the meningitis scare my freshman year of HS. A kid died and there was a ban of sharing sodas/drinks at school. That was one school rule that everyone followed.

I drank water from the garden hose. I'm *twitch* fine.

                                I was born in 1967 ...

When I flew on a plane when I was a kid, we didn't have to go through a metal detector to get to the plane. We didn't have to take off our shoes or belts to go through security and we could certainly take our beverages with us!

This was funny. My friends and I were discussing this yesterday. One of their Dad's was going on and on about, "when I was a kid, blah blah blah." My friend made a great point stating, "True, you did all that, and now the rates of cancer, brain disease, autism, etc. are through the roof."

So I guess it's all how you define, "Survive" Sure, people are alive, but I'm all about quality of life.

I was born in 1963 and I think we had a lot more fun as kids than our kids do now! We also got hurt a lot more!!!

My best memories of that era are all the road trips we took across the country. My younger brother went from Califonia to New York nad back in a bouncy seat that was hanging from the bar in the middle of our convertible Buick!

I think part of the evolution of safety is the fact that we're learning more. For just about every point on that list, there is a counter statement about the cons of doing the behavior. Cars didn't used to have seat belts because manufacturers thought that would give the idea that the cars were unsafe, rather then the drivers.

For example, there is more airline security, because now it is a viable threat against safety. There is no smoking on planes because we know so much more about second hand smoke. I guess I don't see progress in letting people do dumb things that affect those around them.
